Where do I start with comic books or graphic novels?

Having just gotten into them myself, about a year and a half ago, I have come to find out there aren't a lot of things that can be considered graphic novels. Most are comics. However, they do package these up in trade paperbacks so it gives an appearance of a graphic novel. These can be found...

January 2011: Iain Banks: The Wasp Factory

I'm with you there. I have always stayed away from reading horror novels, and yet find myself reading some these days that are classified as such. I guess it depends on your description of horror. I imagined gruesome scenes and thrilling rundowns of the victims (the reasons I stayed away)...

    Top Sci/Fi novels

"Dune" by Frank Herbert. Not so much the sequels, but I loved the first book. Same can be said about "Revelation Space" by Alastair Reynolds. Though I did like the following books in the series more then those with Dune. I also agree with the "Hyperion Cantos" being included.

    Batman Reading Order

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a possible reading order of Batman trades? I have "The Dark Knight Returns" and am very interested in other Batman stories (Dark Victory, Haunted Knight, Hush, The Killing Joke, The Long Halloween, The Man Who Laughs, Year One, Year One Hundred...

    Books with Genius Protagonists?

"The Truth Machine" by James L. Halperin might fit the bill. Very different from Artemis Fowl though.

    Revamping the BOTM process

I like the idea of both making a non-fiction and a sci-fi/horror/fantasy book picked. I think there are a lot more sci-fi/horror/fantasy fans then most think. And I think that non-fiction is overlooked. It is literature after all. (It would also force me to read more of it.) Having...

    looking for books

Not an easy object, because it's subjective, but I would like to offer a few. "Fall On Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald, "Martin Sloane" by Michael Redhill, and "The Brothers K" by David James Duncan.

Suzanne Collins: The Hunger Games trilogy

I will speak up that those older would possibly enjoy this series. I pre-ordered the last book from Amazon and will be turning 40 years old before it arrives. It's been a great series. The characters face many complex issues and the way they handle them has made the stories very compelling.

    Urban fantasy anyone?

How about "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman? One of my favorites regardless of genre.

    Comic books

I have recently gotten started on them, however I would only buy the trade collection copies. I started getting into them when I started reading Gaiman's "Sandman" series over a year ago. Recently I have started reading "The Boys" by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. I prefer ones without...

    Your book activity today

I was too busy watching the Canada v. Slovakia hockey game last night to read. And I didn't even make it through the third period. However, I did read about 20 pages at lunch of "Three Dollars" by Elliott Perlman.

    TBR Number?

In my last count, I have 597 book in my personal library. I think I've read about 60 to 70 of them. So my list would be huge. However, due to a temporary move, I have a small box of books that I will chose my next few from. "The Magic Toyshop" by Angela Carter "Her Fearful Symmetry" by...

    Library thing

I, personally, like GoodReads best. I paid the lifetime membership at LibraryThing, and even think that GoodReads is a better layout. But that's just opinion. I think both are good, and both better then Listal. The only reason I liked Listal was the ability to catalog my CD's and DVD's as...

Good! Starting a new job tomorrow (Mon Feb 15). Was laid off nine and a half months ago. We were relocated for it, so I'm looking forward to the new adventures in a new city. And almost five months ago our second son was born. So things are good. How about you?

    Periodicals about Books?

Locus is the only one that comes to mind, but it is pretty much sci-fi and fantasy. I would certainly like to hear about more myself.

Hard SF - Revelation Space Series

I read the whole series and really enjoyed it. I think the almost gothic-like nature of the different groups helped. Some of the hard sci-fi elements are very, very hard. But we are talking about someone that, at the time he wrote this series, a working scientist with a branch of the European...

warrior heir, wizard heir, dragon heir

No you can't read it for me. :) But you could better explain then just saying it's better. There are countless reviews by people stating why they enjoyed a book. That is all I was asking for. And now you just did what I suggested. You gave me more to think about then just saying it was...

warrior heir, wizard heir, dragon heir

Why don't you tell us why you think that. I have had interest in this series, but haven't heard anything to really convince me. Not that you have to try and convince me, but letting us know why is better then just saying it's good.

    Laugh Out Loud Funny

I'd like to add three. "Shelf Monkey" by Corey Redekop "Marvellous Hairy" by Mark A. Rayner "The Great American Novel" by Phillip Roth

    Books about viruses

"Blood Music" by Greg Bear is along those lines.
