Terry, I just finished reading this book. It's a good historical mystery and I enjoyed it, but I thought I'd give you a bit of unsolicited advice. There are at least 18 characters that I listed from the book. If this seems like a lot (as it did to me), you may want to consider making a list...
Interesting NYT article, I didn't read that before. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read You Suck, but that review was so positive that I'm interested now. The reviewer referred to Dirty Job’s “strange little squirrel people”. Oddly enough, as Moore stated in his Notes and Acknowledgements at...
Used bookstore haul:
Music & Silence, Rose Tremain
Waiting for the Barbarians, J.M. Coetzee
Life & Times of Michael K, J.M. Coetzee
Wicked, Gregory Maguire
Moore is definitely on my short-list of favorite humor writers, just behind Jasper Fforde and Douglas Adams.
I haven't read every Moore book, but I've read 4.5 (I just couldn't finish Lust Lizard). I think I enjoyed A Dirty Job the most, because the plot made the most sense and the stupid...
I recently finished Night by Elie Wiesel, and went to a bookstore today hoping to get Dawn. I didn’t find it, but I became engrossed with all the other books in the Holocaust/WWII section. I already own several books on the Holocaust, but today found a book titled Legacies of Silence by Glenn...
My reads for December:
Beautiful Lies, Lisa Unger 3.5/5
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safran Foer 5/5
Brother Odd, Dean Koontz 4.5/5 (much better than ‘Forever’)
Grief, Andrew Holleran 4/5
Lullabies for Little Criminals, Heather O’Neill 2/5 (awful, totally...
I have to say I think this is an excellent process. If members can try to refrain from wanting instant action I think this will work best for everyone in the long run. Just wanted to post an appreciation to the current moderation "team" for all the work they do and for putting up with all of us.
Greg Rucka is the author of 2 books about a female agent for the British Secret Intelligence Service. The two books are A Gentleman’s Game
and Private Wars.

I recently participated in a similar discussion about female authors in the crime fiction genre. "Where are all the 'great' female mystery writers?" someone asked. Why are all the best men? In response, people started to nominate some of the best female crime novelists they'd read. The man...
Here are my top 10 books of the year, by category:
Fiction
The Road, Cormac McCarthy
A father and son make their way through a post-apocalyptic world. A thoroughly moody, engrossing and thought-provoking novel.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Jonathan Foer
Oskar is a 9-year old...
Void Moon by Michael Connelly features a female burglar pulling a heist at a Las Vegas casino. There’s a lot of detail on how it’s accomplished.
There’s also Lawrence Block’s lighthearted ‘Burglar’ series featuring Bernie Rhodenbarr. Bernie operates a bookstore by day and is a burglar by...
I've only kept a list for the past two years, and for both the total was almost exactly 100. Makes sense, since I know I read about 2 books a week on average. A few more if I added in the ones I've abandoned half-way through.
Smila, there's an existing discussion thread for Lethem here which contains more comments and opinions. He's one of my favorite writers and yes, Motherless Brooklyn was my favorite of all his books.
The best known online dealer of out-of-print books is probably Abebooks. I had searched the site, but none of the results matched your description of the book. You may see something I missed, though. Good luck with your search.
I read something recently that might meet your criteria: Poison Study by Maria Snyder. I enjoyed it a lot. There is a romance in this one, but not much sex. The characters are all very well developed though, and the story is great. Here’s the synopsis:
Some lesser-known books I’ve enjoyed and would recommend:
"The Ha-Ha" by David King
Howard Kapostash is a wounded Vietnam veteran whose injury has left him unable to read, write or speak, but who is, as the card he's always reluctant to give people points out, "of normal intelligence." After...
