Albert Camus; The Stranger

I just wrapped this one up last night. I will say that this is one of those books that starts out slow, slows down even further in the middle, and then ends in a dramatic and bold fashion in the last ten pages. Wow, I haven't read too many books like that, but the finish was well worth it. I would equate it to a prize fighter losing the first 11 rounds soundly and then scoring a KO in the 12th.:D

Who is "the stranger" and what does he want? He is a man who is not trapped by familial connections and resents it that others would expect him to want to be trapped by them. He is a man who doesn't want to be connected to God, and resents that others expect him to. As he is in his cell, perhaps the greatest punishments is not what would cause his death, but rather, the constant and annoying presence of a chaplain. He is one to give him self up to the "indifferent universe" and let things be. This will be a book that in reading, you will be tempted to put down and forget about it as the reading is rather mundane at certain parts. The greater point is not present for quite awhile, unless you've read other works by Camus or are well versed in philosophy or history. This is a book that will have you really thinking about lifes and what is foisted upon us throughout our lives and whether or not they are truly worth it. This is definitely a work of fiction with an intention.
