Amazon Reviews: Harriet Klausner

I remember she joined here and started posting reviews unnecessarily and it seems that she is the "#1 Reviewer" on Amazon having posted, at the time of writing, a total of 9608 reviews.

But would you buy a book on the recommendation of this woman? Every review is three paragraphs long and reads as if she has just copied the back of the book into the box provided and hit the 'Submit' button. The first two paragraphs are a summary of the plot with the third being that part of a blurb that tries to hint at the underlying message of the novel.

And, as far as I can tell, she gives every book a rating of four or five stars even though it seems to be absolute tripe she is reading; the sort of books you would simply pass by in any bookshop, including Amazon, unless your gran wrote it and you were just buying it to be nice.

The prolificity seems to have her reading and reviewing a number of books per day which means she's either retired, unemployed, or a completely fictional character. Either way, she's not a very good reviewer and has no critical eye for anything; I doubt she could comment on the smell of shit.

So, out of 9608 reviews, why have their been 60,239 instances where someone has found her reviews helpful?

You can browse samples of her "critical eye" from her reviews here. The content of these actually suggests to me that she hasn't actually read them.

Just had a look at the reviews that she's done. I agree she couldnt comment on the smell of shit - she seems to read purely shit (and a lot of it) to the point that her senses are immune. Cut and paste. Cut and paste. Cut and paste.

Hey, each to their own and all that, but if you produce a review (and that many of them), then you have to be willing to have your review reviewed - it's only fair.

I've found her site now and this review just goes to show she hasn't a clue what she is talking about. Compare it, for example, with the reviews of the same book here.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with this comment.

The only reviewer on Amazon I take any notice of, mainly as he has a similar taste to mine and can guide me in interesting areas sometimes is this guy:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/cm/member-reviews/-/ATG9TNAQVV5J0/026-6756810-4386827
He's an opinionated bugger and a bit full of himself at times but he tends to review stuff he has an interest in and understanding of, but does so with an honest, good or bad, opinion.

He has good taste in music: five stars for the Luke Haines/The Auteurs B-Sides and Rarities collection.

His wish list is what I tend to check out the most. As he doen't seem to have a massive income he can spot a cut price re-issue a mile off; there are some Kitchens of Distiction and Best of Orange Juice CDs on there for £8.99 at the moment.

Now, back to Harriet Klausner. I'm now under the impression that she works for Random House as I picked a random ten authors for her reviews and they all appeared here, on Random House's list of authors.

Edit: Did a few more and they weren't on the Random House list.

I'm now a bitter Amazon reviewer. I've been trying to get my reviews onto the .co.uk site and still have had no review accepted despite their literacy and constructive criticism. Then I go to the .com site, write a review of a book I've never read, and it's accepted on the same day.

Did they give reasons why your reviews weren't accepted?

I would guess this Harriet person is indeed fictional, or maybe an automated program that grabs book synopsis information and automatically rates the book with a positive review... perhaps under the control of publishers?

No, Amazon workers don't have an ability to communicate with customers on a one to one basis; they have to supply a best fit response to enquiries.

She didn't last long when she she joined here, only a few days, although she still visits without posting.

Has to be on the Payrol!! A book 'fluffer' for Mr. Brown perhaps.
A lot of it is ego, in my opinion. Harriet Klausner has made herself literally famous by posting reviews. Every author in America knows about her.

She can also feel a sense of power - that's what reviewers have. It's benign power because she only posts good reviews. But there is that factor to consider.

This could mean that she either isn't a discriminating reader, or doesn't have the heart to review books she hates.

I know of an author who posted reviews on books she'd never read just to up her status at Amazon. She had the time to post bogus reviews, but not the time to read.

Many authors have bantered that question about: When does Harriet read all those books? Amazon doesn't check unless they receive a series of complaints and evidence exists that the complaints are founded (like an online confession that someone captures and sends to them).

So, Harriet is an enigma. A famous enigma. An enigma with benign power.

But I never place any weight on her reviews either. She clearly doesn't share my opinion about books I've read. I presume she doesn't share what my opinion would be on books I haven't.

Something similar happened to Jorge Luis Borges. ;)

I don't think, to be honest, she actually has an opinion.

Yes they do. Try this address: community-help@amazon.com

Sometimes you get scripted replies, so make your inquiry so specific and individualized that they have to respond to you. Or just keep after them, sending them a copy of their canned reply explaining why they weren't "helpful". There are actual people there - I've communicated with them a hundred times for various reasons.

Have you tried getting a new login name and submitting reviews under that? You need separate credit card information for every login you create. You can't post reviews without credit card information anymore, but you would have been taken to that screen so I'm sure you know about that.

So I'm wondering if there's something wrong with your login or your credit card. I would try and post as someone else just to see if that works. Maybe you were reported for something and aren't aware of it, or maybe the computer glitched out on your sign-in. Worth a shot, anyway.

I've had every review I ever sent them posted, with only one exception. So I think there's a technical issue involved.

There's no technical problems as I've been trying for over a month and I ordered books just over a week ago. I'm just going to keep posting the review, every day, until they accept. :D

Or I may just review on the .com site - it does, afterall, have the largest reach.
