I woulda put this in Movie and TV but I didn't want to. Films that start as good novels don't belong beside the schlock that does not.

Oh, exciting! Life of Pi is one of my favourite books, so I'll be looking forward to this one. I havn't actually seen any movies by this director - is she any good? I know that she was nominated for an Oscar, but I don't trust them ever since Keisha Castle-Hughes was also nominated

Ohhh you should see Amélie. It's a fantastic movie, so wonderfully put together.

While I haven't read Life of Pi (yet) I'm pretty sure anything directed by Amélie's director will turn out well.

I have moved this topic to the TV and Film section. It is written on the main page under this particular section that 'If you want to talk about how a particular book has been adapted for film, please use one of the book discussion areas'. However, this is not a discussion about how the book is being adapted, merely which director has been chosen.

I think Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a very skilled director. He has an unusal sense for expressing emotions visually in his films (for example Amelie melting into a pool of water when she is nervous). He seems to be a romantic and an optimist.

Ions, I'm curious about what you mean too.

I often find that films that start as good novels are disappointing because good novels are hard to adapt to the big screen without changing a lot.

I also find that many stories that were created for that exact screen often do very well as films. A good novel as a basis is by no means a guarantee of success - the cartoon of Richard Adams' Watership Down is plenty proof of that.

That's a very good point and you'll be hearing no argument from me about Watership Down. Those bunnies wuz scarifying.

His last movie was also an adaptation of a book and i found the film to be much better. I've yet to read Life of Pi outside of the writers introduction(which i loved)

The writer and director of Amelie also did A Very Long Engagement which was another wonderful film.

<3

I saw it 8 times in the cinema and own it on dvd,it's such a wonderful movie but unlike Amelie it is flawed but i prefer it. It's slightly superior to the novel as well !
