Amy Hempel: The Dog Of The Marriage

Just starting this and it looks like a very short read.

I saw that some others were reading or have read this book recently and I really hope when I'm done we can compare notes.

I'm really struggling with this. It's such a short, compact book. After days, I'm only about at the halfway mark. I almost dread reading it, even though I like her writing. The passivity of the main character in each story is very depressing. They just exist, letting things happen to them, not taking any action or position. I was really looking forward to this book, but now . . .

There's something off about Hempel. I get the feeling she's in an emotional fog. These stories are groping in the dark.
