An AMAZING twist

It's ironic that the credibility and reputation of James Frey - author of A Million Little Pieces - has been damaged, because he overstated, embellished and exaggerated his problems with the law and with substance abuse. He might be the first person in history to get in trouble like that. Anybody else causes a scandle when they DON'T mention this stuff and it gets found out. Can you imagine the fallout if it came out that Alito had ever had these problems? With James Frey, it's the opposite.
Weird.

Frey also repeatedly claimed that everything in his book was 100% true, until someone busted him on it. Then he went back and said he embellished it.

Larry King did a masterful job of wrenching the truth out of him. Frey was squirming. I just find it ironic, as I said, that he's getting flack for not being as bad a low-life as he originally claimed.

^That's probably not the issue as much as the fact that millions (?) bought the book based on what they thought was the truth. I always figure that people who write books like that, embellish a little.

As long as your enjoy the story, and you find inspiration in it, how much does it matter. I mean sure, if it was Clinton's My Life or something, sure. But a book about Drug Addiction? I mean, you know if it's a real life story, the author is NOT going to be 100% on everything.

Yeah, but at least Bill Clinton has lived a life that would interest some people. This guy just popped up out of nowhere, and is making loads of money, based on lies.

The standard for nonfiction is that the author make every effort to honestly recall and retell events. Frey just lied, repeatedly and blatantly, throughout his book.

As to why it matters - think about it in other terms if you don't understand the concept of honor in writing. What's wrong with selling tainted meat as long as people enjoy it? I mean, only some people will get sick.

True. I hadn't looked at it that way.

That's pretty gracious considering my writing "if you don't understand the concept of honor in writing." Sorry about that. I'm usually not that bitchy to people I've only just met.
