Anaïs Nin: Delta Of Venus

SPOILERS!!! ;)
Erotic!

From the Publisher (Harcourt)
In Delta of Venus Anais Nin penned a lush, magical world where the characters of her imagination possess the most universal of desires and exceptional of talents. Among these provocative stories, a Hungarian adventurer seduces wealthy women then vanishes with their money; a veiled woman selects strangers from a chic restaurant for private trysts; and a Parisian hatmaker named Mathilde leaves her husband for the opium dens of Peru. This is an extraordinarily rich and exotic collection from the master of erotic writing.

Lenny nero and I started talking about Delta of Venus in my Dark Tower thread. Just thought I'd move it to a new place.

Just thought I'd move some of our posts as well.

Libra, I see you are reading Delta of Venus next. I read that years ago. I think my fave story was called Basque and Bijou.

Lenny, I'm in the middle of Delta of Venus. Right now I'm reading Elena (the story right before Basque & Bijou). I can't wait to read B&B. My reading is going slow though 'coz of school work.

I'm still on Elena (60 pages). There are too many tests coming up in school that I have to study for. But I'm really excited about Basque & Bijou (36 pages). So far though, Marianne is my favourite. What did you think of that one, Lenny?

Lenny nero said:
Marianne was a good one, too. I need to go back and read some of those to refresh my memory. That book is one of my fave classic erotica books, along with The Story of O. Great stuff!

Sorry to post off-topic, Libra6Poe, but I'd just like to say that it is driving me mad seeing that very interesting Dark Tower thread in General Books, and being unable to look at it because I have only just finished book 5 and need to buy book 6. Aaarrrrggghhhhh!!!!! Just needed to get that out of my system. Thank you. :)

'Marianne'

Libra, in answer to your question from the other thread, yes, Marianne is a good one too. ;) Have you seen the movie Henry and June? It's about Henry Miller's affair with Nin. If you haven't seen it, you should definitely check it out.

oops!

I'm so sorry Halo!!! When I put it in the general book forum, I was so new on thebookforum that I just didn't know better. I do wish I could move it. :( I hope you liked Wolves of the Calla though!!!

Omg! Henry & June? I've always seen it at the video store but didn't know it was about Henry Miller! I'll definitely rent that the next time I go to Blockbuster! Thank you! You have such wonderful ideas!

(The only Miller I've read was Quiet Days in Clichy - I loved it. I have Tropic of Cancer & Tropic of Capricorn though... need to read that soon.)

Elena

I finished Elena today. At first I didn't care about it so much, but it was really really good. It was like, about self discovery. Elena trying to figure out who she was, what she loved, how she wanted to be loved, what pleased her sexually, etc...

I loved the part when Elena, Leila, and Bijou were all together.
three diversely beautiful women exhaled such sensual auras that a man would have been overcome

It was a wonderful story!
Can't wait to start Basque & Bijou ;)

I've moved your Dark Tower thread to the Sci-fi/Fantasy forum. Hope this is what you meant.

Marianne

The thing I liked most about Marianne was how it dealt with fetishes from two views.

He wanted to be a model. At this Marianne rebelled. if he had not derived a [...] from being looked at, she might not have minded. But knowing this, it was as if he were giving himself to the whole class. She could not bear the thought. She fought him...She stayed at home and wept like a jealous woman who knows her lover is with another woman.

Hope you noticed that I'm being very very careful not to be too sexually explicit. ;)

Hey, don't apologise, I didn't mean to imply that I thought it was in the wrong forum, just that I would love to read it but can't yet! :) Yes, I loved Wolves... I'm now in the bloody awful position of having bought the final book but being unable to read it because I don't own book 6.

Ha ha! When I reread later what you wrote, I realized you didn't mean it was in the wrong forum. Oh well, I wanted it moved anyway. But I'm so sorry you don't have book VI yet!!! I really hope you like it! Wolves of the Calla has quite the cliff hanger - it left me anxious and almost grumpy waiting for Song of Susannah to come out. :p Oh, and when you do finish SOS, at least you don't have to wait for the seventh since you already have it. So that's a plus! ;) Good luck and I really hope you enjoy it. And I await anxiously for you to post in the Dark Tower thread!

You have cheered me up slightly! Thanks. :)

Nin does have a knack for dealing with fetishes in a very non-fetishistic way. I like her stuff. I've been meaning to pick up some of those books of her diaries.

still reading :(

I'm so sorry I've been neglecting this thread. I've been sooo behind on my reading. I'm still reading The Basque and Bijou. I'm only 20 pages in :( . But so far, it's quite intriguing and quite different from the previous stories in the book.

So far:

I love the description of Viviane
She laid her body down as in some classical painting,
The descriptions of Bijou are just amazing, she sounds sooo exotic and too beautiful for words.
She was shaped as if she had been molded in a corset.
The scenes where The Basque is showing Bijou off to his friends sounded incredibly humiliating. The feelings I had for that scenario are the same feelings I had when I first started reading Anne Rice's The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty.
Right now, I'm in the middle of Bijou's visit with the clairvoyant. This part is a little uncomfortable and somehow violating. Perhaps my feelings will change as I read on.

I'm really enjoying this story. Lenny, you definitely have great taste! ;)

I also like the "Maman" character. She sounds very interesting. I also enjoyed her eye for the "hand" & "glove" thing. :p

I finished the part with Bijou & the clairvoyant. He was definitely quite unusual. I was thinking, if I was Bijou, I would've left him long before he tried to pierce her. I would've left after seeing how he had more of an interest in her clothes than her body. But it was sooo different. I haven't read a lot of erotica, so this was very interesting.

Finished "The Basque & Bijou"

Yay Lenny! I finally finished it. My favourite part is when Bijou & Leila go horseback riding. It seemed fun. :p

I didn't like it when everyone went to the picnic and The Basque & Pierre pinned Bijou. It reminded me of Beauty's Punishment when the Inn keeper pours butter over Beauty and drops a cat on her.

I really loved the last part - a story of The Basque when he was 17 and his encounter with his sister's governess. But what I can't understand and do not find realistic is that he isn't "physically mature" at the age of 17.

Anyway, I like the end when he tries to act out feelings/desires for the governess with a prostitute, only to be let down.

I'm glad you liked it! This is the only work that I've read of Nin's, I really need to read some more of her stuff, especially her unexpurgated diaries. They were the basis for Henry and June.

If you liked Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy, let me recommend Laura Antoniou's The Marketplace series. It's not a S/M fairytale like Rice's work but takes place in modern day. I finished the 5th book recently and am eagerly awaiting the 6th! It's great erotica with some surprisingly three dimensional characters.

If you looking for more classic erotica, check out George Bataille's The Story of the Eye or Reage's The Story of O. I read the latter when I was 14 and have been hooked on high class smut ever since! :p
