Any other Dickens fans out there?

I am really into all the Victorians and was wondering if there are any othe Dickens fans on these boards. I am presently doing a reread of Oliver Twist, as Roman Polanski's new movie version is coming out in September, and I am looking forward to comparing the two.

Cricket,

It took me a while to get into Dicken's. His writing style is very dry sometimes, but he has moments in his books that really grab you. I remeber reading some New Yorkers and the stories they presented were set on scenes. The author would take a scene and tell a story, without any action. That's when I started appreciating Dicken's. A modern day great descriptive author is Haruki Murakami.

I tolerate Dicken's because of what he has give us, but all other authors that write like him I usually turn down. I know what a tiger looks like or a lamp post or a night shirt. Are culture has been able to give us all sorts of knowledge, so I don't need bad writers like Dan Brown to tell me what a freaking donut looks like.

Great Expectations is by far the best book turned into movie of all time. The one with Ethan Hawk. The scene where he is painting Gwen is hot and the editing is exceptional.

Welcome back! As you can see, someone posted in the Dickens thread fairly recently, so you'll probably be able to find quite a few users interested.

Other threads you might enjoy are the ones on A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist.

I hated that movie.

Any suggestions as to the best Dickens book to read first of all? I've never read any and would like to read a good one first to grab me. I was thinking of David Copperfield but it looks like one of the biggest and that put me off a bit. (Says she who's reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell!)

Why not wait a month or so and read A Christmas Carol. It's short, easy and typical Dickens. I've read it every Christmas for the last few years to my six year old son and I enjoy it anyway.

I also read Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve - it really gets me in the festive mood! As for other of Dickens' work, I am afraid he bores me greatly. I love the stories he tells, but I cannot get past his writing style. I might have another go at some of my favourites, but he is not an author I relish the idea of reading really. :(

You could also try the rest of the Christmas stories. They are all about the same length and, in some editions, you can buy a book containing all of them.

Thanks - I will maybe get myself a couple more christmas stories for this christmas. :)

Wonderful suggestions, thank you. I think that I'll try to get a copy with all of the Christmas stories in. :)

I feel exactly the same way about Dickens. I have read all of his books which have been adapted into modern English and really enjoyed them, but for the life of me I cannot get into his writing style. So boring

A Christmas Carol is not very representative of Dickens' work. It's much easier comparitively and not only because of it's short length. I haven't read a whole lot of Dickens yet but what I have read, David Copperfield, Hard Times and A Christmas Carol[/], I have loved.
