I have been meaning to post this up for a while but never got around to it.

As you know, Amazon offers free super saver shipping on lots of items. Thing is, you have to spend $25. What happens if your total is $24.50?

BAR, meet Slickfillers: http://www.slickfillers.net/

Edit the search to books only and you're set!

Or, even easier, don't bother with Amazon and use The Book Depository since they do free shipping worldwide. So no need to push yourself to free delivery limits. Order the single book you want...and wait. Since I've never ordered from the US, I don't know, but I suspect since they send free to the US via Airmail, that you will also get the decent UK covers in many cases.

Even better. You're the man Stewart!

If I'm not back in three days..you'll know I got lost in this place:)

Maybe I'm wrong but I took a short look into this webpage and their prices seem a bit, well, off the chart compared to the U.S. pricing.

I've been in the U.K. three weeks ago and bougth the new Mo Hayder. I paid almost $24 for a paperback in a regular bookstore.

Sorry, but I'll stick to Amazon and B&N.

Well, to be fair, the cost of living is greater in the UK, so to me those prices are cheap. (Plus, we have better covers, save for the odd exception.)

Something else to consider: Some titles are not available in the US. A couple of years ago I wanted to read a particular book, and it wasn't listed on Amazon US or anywhere else I could find here. So I tried interlibrary loan. Two months later, I got a call from my ILL lady saying she had this book for me and get this: it came all the way from England...and I owed $17 for postage!(Twice the original price of the book). Since I was not aware the library system even went out of country..we didn't know to stipulate 'US only"..My library split the cost of the shipping with me, as it was partly their error and we've all learned from that episode. For this discussion.. determine how badly you want a title and go from there.

Amazon works fine for me because I rarely by new. When you pay pennies plus shipping for a hardcover, then even the cover art seems unimportant.

Where have I been?

Just came across Stewart's mention of The Book Depositry - where the h£** have I been!! Free Delivery worldwide!!!

With no Free Super Saver Shipping from Amazon to Ireland, this is a real find. Just browsed their extensive catalogue - looking for something on fiction writing for me and a thriller for my wife (well I just had to buy something!)

And I've just saved EUR10 on the two books versus Amazon and a cool EUR20versus the local (and only Irish) Borders.

Thanks Stewart. I've just got back my subscription fee to Book & Reader :D

Value for Money Book Websites

Hi All,

I want to order a number of books. I usually go to Amazon, however I find they ad excessive VAT and shipping fees while I place the order.

Does anyone know any good book websites where I can keep costs down? Is anyone aware of a site that compares prices for the same book from different suppliers that they would recommend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks In Advance for All Responses.

Amazon sets the shipping price for their sellers so I don't think it's that bad. Compare shipping costs on Amazon to what the typical ebay seller is asking when $7 to $9 or more for shipping is not uncommon.

CheapBooks® - Buy Cheap Books | Textbooks | Used Books is a good comparison site.

That's the main reason I like half.com. They're under ebay's umbrella..the only thing I don't like is the buyer has to use a credit card; paypall is not an option.
