Authors Advertising

Out of interest - and topicality - what's the policy on authors advertising their books on the forum and then disappearing never to be seen again?

They could at least stay and discuss their book.. But since thats not the case I have heard of some methods of persuading them, they might even survive it.

if it is authorised (ie through Darren, who often lets long standing members post links), then generally it's allowed.

Otherwise, feel free to shoot away (though shooting seems a little too quick -we're always open to new suggestions with regards to what to do with them).

Hahaha - with my shooting skills it won't be quick at all. And now they're on about banning hunting, I need a new hobby.

Doesn't sound as much fun as shooting. Maybe I'll take up stalking instead of just talking about it.

Not sure yet. Maybe I'll start a thread and any TBF members who fancy being stalked can pop their name on the list.

I want to be a broccoli stalk. They are unloved yet noble.

I had a personal stalker once. It started when he was 15 and I was 17 and went on for a few years. I called him FWF, for Freshman Who Follows. He seemed embarrassed to be doing it, but he kept doing it anyway. He maintained a respectable distance, which was nice. There he would be, peeking out from a doorway half a block away. He followed me in high school, and then he followed me when I lived alone in Manhattan. When he stopped, I felt like something was missing from my life. Then I learned to drive.

authors advertising their books on the forum...
Has anyone ever read the books that have been posted on the forum? Has anyone bothered to look for or buy them? And if anyone has read them, can they be recommended?

It's been awhile now, but some of you may remember we had a sub-forum titled "Book/author News" (or something similar) where people could post book-related news. A lot of authors joined for the sole purpose of advertising their book in that section. Some were clever enough to make a pretense of joining other discussion threads - but it was funny how they managed to bring up their own book in the conversation.

Anyways, it became just another way for authors to spam TBF. When Darren reorganized and redesigned TBF, it was left out. So the official policy on advertising is the same for everybody (eg. Link to your own site is allowed in your siggy; no blatant links to commercial sites; state if you are affiliated to site you are recommending, etc.).

We've given the benefit of the doubt to authors who join up, post, and mention their book. If it's a one time only post - so be it. They'll fade away into oblivion. If they're legit, we'll have gained valuable members (see Cathy C and CTAdams).

In addition, members can PM any of the mods if they think someone is spamming/advertising.

Okay, Stewart?
