Battlestar Galactica

Anyone seen the new "updated" series being shown on Sky One?

I remember watching the old series when it was on TV. Same era as "Knight Rider" and "The A-Team".

I have a few problems with the new show. why'd They cancel the old show? it actually made a profit. 'battlestar galactica' has been ripped off so many times since then. one of the actors in it even said (at the premier of the show!), "if you liked the old one, you probably won't like the new one". anyway, sci-fi lost me a couple years ago when they cancelled 'mystery science theater 3000'.

The old show only ran for one series (24 episodes), which was a shame. There was "Battlestar Galactica 1980" which carried on but only last a few shows and seemed to kill it off.
They discovered earth so I guess there wasn't anywhere left for them to go

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the new series.

Daren, glad you brought up the new Battlestar. I was going to make a post on it myself!

Personally, I think its FANTASTIC! One of the best things to happen in SF or tv for along time.

I know a few people don't like it but it seems to me that those people can't seem to get the old Battlestar out of their heads. If you go into watching the show expecting the origonal you will be dissapointed. The creators have stated many times that this show is not a follow on or even a re-make of the origonal but a re-invisioning of the show. I really don't care that Starbuck is now a woman or that they changed this or they changed that. All I care about is that it's well directed and well written, which I think it is. Forget the old show!

I think it's great because it's it has a high emotional charge to it. You can really feel how terrible it was to loose their world and all those millions of people. Like in the first true ep. one of the characters is trying to see if any of her family is on one of the ships and is told that she will just have to add her photo to the wall because it's not possible to trace. She goes to the hall and there is just hundreds and hundreds of photos that cover the entire walls of this passage. Here, in the new Battlestar it's as much about emotions and plot as about blowing stuff up and tech mumbo jumbo ( are you listening startreck? ) Finally a SF that's not like a third rate buddy movie with explosions and space ships.

I also think it's great because they have kept it gritty and realistic. The every day things that have to deal with like food shortage and ammo for the guns. Like water and moral. I like the way the ships have to move around with thrusters instead of just "flying" though space.

Finally, I think its very well shot and directed and the cast does a really great job in the acting department!

In short, in case you have not guessed... BIG FAN! I Love it!!! :)

What did you think of it Darren?

I thought it was excellent. I've only seen the first two shows (I think they're the "miniseries"), and I've got the first episode of season 1 taped to watch later this week - although I now know a little of what happens!

At first I was thinking, hang on, that's not in the original series, but once you get over that it's excellent.

I love the new twist with some of the Cylons being "human" and even one not knowing she's actually a Cylon.

Yeah, love that twist too!!!

I watched yesterday's one today. They explore that twist in the 2nd ep. in a really great way. It's going to be great to watch how they play that one out! :) I hope you taped the second show!

i've only seen most of the new mini-series and i thought it was excellent! sillywabbit, you've basically covered all the reasons i enjoyed it. it was dramatic and emotionally compelling. i was absorbed!! :)

i dont think we get the show over here - i haven't ever seen it advertised. if someone in north america can give me showtimes and channel details i would appreciate it.

thanks bobby. unfortunately, we don't get the us sci-fi channel. i just checked on our sci-fi channel (spacecast.com) and it says they won't air it til January :(

I don't like this show whatsoever.
I'm surprised Ron Moore had something to do with it, considering he was the guy that was behind the scenes of some of the excellent Star Trek incarnations.
First of all, in common with "Enterprise"- the show was that I couldn't give a damn about any of the characters although I found the blonde Cylon about the most interesting with her beliefs.
Lots of gratuitous sex and gratification for the sake of it.
Caprica getting nuked: So this has become a morality play- we're being told not to mess with nuclear weapons- oh please!
Instead of being shrouded in mystery- with the Cylons being created by a long dead lost reptilian civilisation- they were created by man kind- another lesson- not to create our machines too smart- Oh please!
There is a militaristic cold feel now- where as the old show had a warm family feel to it. In times of adversity the warm family feel was all they had, and it was refreshing coming from the BattleCrusier sterility of Star Trek from the 1960s (which I LOVED though).
I think Apollo lacks presence.
I didn't find much suspense in the show and I wasn't left wanting to find out more- sitting on the edge of my seat.
Even with the best use of the gimmicks of having the Cylons among us and looking JUST LIKE US *gasp*!
Ok , so all these grumbles BEFORE I compare it with the old classic show. I don't like this poilitically correctness gone mad, with Starbuck as a woman. If they wanted to make a strong woman character- why didn't they chose to develop Athena or Cassiopeia? I found her character obvious, and I didn't really empathise with her, her lack of discipline and "shooting from the hip" has been over done to say the least. I prefer to look up to characters that show some semblence of intelligence even if they are impulsive (like James Kirk for instance). Why do I keep on watching the show? Mainly because if there's one thing that years of Star Trek has taught me- its to not lose hope. I did this with Enterprise before I finally gave up. I wouldn't mind seeing Boltar and That Cylon succeed and continue while Humanity perished- now that would be worth waiting for!
Good points? The effects are good but that isn't anything new these days- the ships drifting in Newtonian motion.

Now that this has been running for a few weeks, what do people think?

I'm enjoying it, but it seems to be running very slowly. The storyline doesn't seem to be progressing much although they are building a lot of the characters.

I'm really enjoying it a lot :)

Did you see last weeks ep? I really like the whole "what does it mean to be human" thing they are going with. In the last ep they really explored that.

Last weeks ep
where the cylon said that Adama was also a cylon!

I like the whole feel to the show and how the cylons are human yet alien at the same time. Yeah, it's really a great show. Great characters and good plots.

Yes, I would agree the overall stoy line is maybe a bit slow but then it was always going to be a problem because really there's not that much you can do with this over ( 13 eps I think? ).

I remember watching the old show when I was a kid--tried never to miss it. Loved it, love the new one too. What don't I miss? The gaping plot holes. At least Adama fessed up to someone that this whole Earth thing was bogus. The new cylons are much more impressive too. (I know it was the 70's--Cylons AND Stormtroopers waddled when they ran.) Plus a jillion other things.

The acting in the new show is exponentially better. The new Apollo is a much better actor than the old Apollo was. The new Starbuck is much better looking, thats for sure and she carries it off very well (its not like either one of them had big shoes to fill or anything but they do a good job.) I like it that its more realistic I know there's some basic plot elements that were changed--like the family thing that REX was talking about. I think its more realistic that they're not all lovey on each other. It makes more sense to me that Adama and Apollo wouldn't get along since they are both the driven military types. In the old series it was sort of like Father Knows Best in space. It seems like the sorta stole a page from the Terminator on the cylons, but it makes sense in this series.

And in the old series there wasn't much evidence of the shock that had to be there. It was just another day in space. Ho Hum, they nuked my whole planet. Think I'll go blow up some cylons--a ship fire? Whoopeee! Like they were on prozac or something. These new folks are devastated and you can tell it. They're worn out from fatigue and from being on the edge of getting wiped out.

Great series--Oh yeah, I'll be watchin' all of these babies.

Yeah, it was great! Although, I have to say a touch of boredom did start creeping in for me because I felt they just dragged it out way to much. It's like they had only a few plot threads and dragged it out over 13 eps. It's just they were treading the same themes and plot elements over and over. OK, we get the cylons are just like us. OK, I understand the whole "what is it to be human" subcontext. GET ON WITH IT!!! DO SOMETHING ELSE!!! Having said that I did think that it was really great show and looking forward to more! If they up the pace a bit and make it more varied then it's going to be perfect! :)

Yes, I agree with that Wabbit. It did move a bit too slowly for a few episodes.

Intersting thing I found out yesterday is that the US version has a different opening score. The woman's vocals are not there, and it has a slighly more "patriotic" theme to it with a military drum beat in it.

I really like the theme tune to the one we get :)

From the ending looks like they willl be making more. Let's hope they come up with stories that are a little more varied.
