I have a book in my collection - long out of print - and so obscure it does not even show up in Google or Amazon searches. It is a wonderful little book, called Beanstalk by John Rackham. It's a takeoff on the Jack and the Beanstalk tale, set in some medieval world (as usual) but in this one, a space traveler suddenly appears at Jack's poor farm, and together they go to another planet to fight the giant.
This paperback was published by DAW books (also defunct?) in 1973 - not exactly the year of the flood, but not yesterday either. I picked it up for a buck at a sidewalk used book stand years ago.
I'm at a loss - the binding of this book has disintegrated, and the pages are yellow and brittle. The book reminds me of the scene in The Time Machine where Rod Taylor finds the library and all the books are so weathered and brittle that they disintegrate at his touch.
Don't know what to do. I started to scan every page once, but got pretty tired of that. I'll have to do it though.
Anyone ever read this book?
