Best Book You Ever Read

At one time, I would have said The Grapes of Wrath. Now I have no idea. I don't know if I could make the decision, even if I were forced to touch a hot iron bar until I made up my mind. :eek:
 
Now I am not the religious/spiritual type but I must say the Bible. This was done over a period of years of course. Oh and I did not read it every single day. I did not read it for godly guidance or nothing of that nature. I read it to gain wisdom from it. It truly is the best book, or books, I have ever read.
 
My favourite book is From Here to Eternity by James Jones.

I think part of the appeal is that the main character stands up for his principles, even though in the end it costs him his life. Also he is an ordinary working class type fellow, not an outstanding hero type. It also has a military background which appeals to me.

Very long, and took me a while to get into, many years ago, but an excellent book with many characters. The movie does it no justice at all.
 
I would have to say Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire. As a lover of vampires it was like giving a child a great big piece of candy! :D

And the bible, no doubt, is a great work of literature, and much more than that to some.

The Good Earth - Pearl S. Buck
Why?
For its beauty and wisdom, ecapsulated in its utter simplicity.

Past Caring..........Robert Goddard.
Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.......Hunter Davies.
Endless Night.........Agatha Christie
Dracula.............Bram Stoker :eek:
 
Im afraid the only way I can awnser this question without causing an imense internal conflict, is to awnser it in the plural.
To name a few:
"The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
"The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" (still ranks in the top after all these years).
"The Bridge at Andau" by James A. Mitchner.
"Animal Farm" by George Orwell
"The great Divorce", "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis
I have also been struck quite profoundly by many of the historical biograghys, documentaries, and memoirs I have come accross however Im afraid there is a few to many to for this list.
 
Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh.

Just because you've seen and loved the film, don't think you needn't read the book. It's brilliant.
 
Orwell

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. I like classic dystopian novels and this one is simply the best. It is a cautionary tale about herd mentality. (Something that is very popular these days...)
 
Of course, there are more than one:

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Stand by Stephen King
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

I know there are more that have affected me deeply, but I can't think of them now.:confused:
 
I don't know if it's the absolute best book I've ever read, but it's the first to come to mind: Natasha Rostova's The Captivation, published by Black Lace. It's basically porn, but it led me to the lifestyle I live, because I found it in my sister's house, read it, and talked to her some about the kinky things found within. Thus, I learned.
 
I think the question, 'best book I ever read' needs a qualifier, at least for me. Let's say:

"Best book I ever read, between the time I started reading, and the first time I decided a book WAS the best...up to that point."

I have to say '1984,' at age 12.
