Big Love on HBO

Cable channel HBO has a new series coming out, titled Big Love. The plot centers on a man who has three wives, three mortgages, and a hardware business. The critics have given this show some good reviews, as it portrays an odd world in a fascinating way a la Sopranos. Tom Shales of the Washington Post also has an interesting write up regarding the show as well. I can't find the link for it now, but I remember reading earlier in the week about officials in Utah not being very thrilled about this show airing. Time will tell if it will be a great hit. One more day until the show airs. Anyone plan on watching this?

I'm trying VERY hard to resist premium cable right now. We've had some addiction issues in the past. This show sounds really great though. I'll probably have my brother burn them to DVDs for me, so I'll be watching it, just not as quickly as everyone else.

That is exactly what I'm going to do!!.:D Though in my case, my brother in law.:D

We have cable, well actually satelite, but not HBO or any movie channels. There was hardly ever anything we wanted to see, and not worth the extra IMO. They have what they call encore stations that get some movies on them.

And as far as the new show, the sight of a man with three wives, no matter how (supposedly) cute(ly) portrayed would make my blood boil.

That's what my husband tells me

He has enough of an earache with just me, without having the time or energy for anyone else, the cheeky so-and-so  ;) :D

How on earth can a man cope with three wives?!  :D :D

LOL-the Mormons practiced polygamy partly out of necessity. During the early years of the church, many began to trek westward to the great salt lake. A lot of men died and there were plenty of widows with children. Sooooo, you have a man marry three or four women and the poor lug has to take care of the wagons, the animals, and provide for the wives and children. When one thinks of such an arrangement, you might imagine a man being fed grapes and fanned by two of his wives, but the reality was much different.

From what I can gather, the series is more than just about how *cute* it would be, it does portray the dynamics between the three women(the first is headstrong, the youngest is fairly naive) and that in and of itself could be an entire season I'd imagine.

In regards to having more than one wife, I'd go insane. Talk about a hen-pecked husband.

I wasn't planning on watching it. I think it's kind of encouraging the polygamist lifestyle, and I don't think that's good. It's not so much the monogamy thing as it is that you never hear of a woman having three husbands, because THAT would make her a (insert word of your choice here). Also, I've heard from legit sources that if a man has 18 wives and he dies, the women are forced to marry other men they don't know, and that it's a breeding ground for pedophilia and incest.
