I hope someone can help me find a book about a young teen living in the eastern US, Kentucky maybe, with his aunt and uncle on a farm. The setting is Cumberland 'something', possibly a town or county. He explores the hills and finds a cave/hole in a hillside which he enters and it takes him to another time and place.
One illustration shows the boy falling from the portal as if falling from a hole in a steep hillside or riverbank. In another part of the story he is in a hurry to finish chores and catches a fuel barrel with a blade on the back of the tractor and tips the barrell over, spilling all of the fuel his uncle had just put in it.
I read this book in the mid 70's. Our grade school library's copy had an aqua hard cover. Not much to go on but I have searched the web and am coming up with no clues.
