Book top 100

I just saw The Internet Top 100 SF/Fantasy List, that direstraits linked to in a post. I think that it is an excelent site but unfortunately it has not been updated for over a year. That made me think that it might be time for a new one. So I would like to make one.

So if you would like to have a new list, send your top 10 list to book@divinemoon.net and I will try to make a list.

I don't plan to make it a list only for Sci-Fi & fantasy, but if you would write the genre I'll write it in the list.

Tell me what you think of this idea and let me know if you have any suggestions as to what the list should be like.

When I finish I will upload the list to my website http://www.divinemoon.net/

I think it's a swell idea. Question, though - will you be compiling the list all by your lonesome? Most importantly, are you doing it manually?

Here are my thoughts - when you're starting out, doing this manually may be alright, however given the volume of email you'll get when word gets out about your list, you may struggle with the load. I suspect this is why the Top 100 SF/Fantasy List hasn't been updated in a long while - the compiler either got fed up or got married.

I had planed on making it manually at first, and then later have some of my friends make a program to do the sorting for me.
Don't think it's going to be to bad at first and I don't really mind doing the sorting manually. :)

Use a spreadsheet

Do you have a spreadsheet program like Excel? If you do, it'll make the sorting much easier and its really easy to set up.

For example, make the headings as you mentioned: Author, Title, Genre, and Rating (1 to 10). Then set a heirarchy of sorting -- using the "Rating" numbers on top -- and the other headings as you wish. You then plug in all books and titles as they come in THEN let the program sort for you.

Much, much easier than doing it all manually.

I do have Excel, but I hadn't thought of using it but you are right it will be much easier so thanks.

Actually, what I meant by "not doing it manually" is actually writing a program that sits in the web server.

The program will serve up a webpage that allows visitors to visit via a browser to type in the title and the author of the nominated book. When the user clicks OK, the webserver program will first check to see if the book has already been nominated, if so then increase it's tally. If not, then the program will automatically create a new entry in the database. The results can be seen in real-time, at anytime, regardless of volume. All this without having a person actually do anything once the program is set up and running.

Of course there'll be certain technical issues like how to stop a person from spamming the server with repeated nominations for the same book, thereby artificially increasing it's rating. Another issue is what happens when a person nominates a book that's already in the database, but the title of the book is mispelled (this will happen even when done manually).

But those can be solved with a generous sprinkling of spells. :)

Sorting with Excel would be easy, but you'd still have to manually key it in.

Just thought that people sending me their top 10 isn't the best way to make this list. So instead I will do it like it is done at this site http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/6113/t100256.txt
So instead of sending me your top 10 then send med a list where you rate the book from 1-10 where 10 is best.
Example
Author - Title (Rating)

Book@divinemoon.net
Ok so you want my top ten => no problem, but I did not get the thing with the rating.

So do you want it like that:
option1
book1 - 10points
book2 - 9points
book3 - 8points
book4 - 7points
book5 - 6points
....

or like that:
option2
book1 - 8points
book2 - 10points
book3 - 8points
book4 - 8points
book5 - 10points
....

Cheers :D

I would be option 2 and you can rate all the books you can think of.
