Bush's Brain

I found this at goodwill and couldn't believe it. Usually you find old work out tapes from the 80's or some garbage likethat, this was a rare find. The documentary is about Karl Rove, whom a lot of folks believe is Bush's "brain." The documentary coers Rove's rise as a political advisor and how at the right time, he as bent the truth in order to push his man to victory. The documentary is sort of whiny about that and having worked on various local and state campaigns, I can tell you that somewhat shady shenanigans are not the invention of Rove. The man is highly intelligent and is a student of history. He likes to model the Bush campaign and White House along the lines of that of McKinley and his "brain." This is a good documentary, though you have to bring your skepticism with you as the hand-wringing gets to be a bit much.

I've heard about this before, but haven't had a chance to see it. My movie store doesn't carry it (but they do have eight copies of the future classic, Dead Silence  ). A friend who saw it had similar things to say about it though. She said that the intended message could have been stated better and that the "sniveling tone detracted from the research".

There is a very relevant article about Rove in the current issue of The Atlantic Monthly. It explains Rove's fascination with McKinley and his belief that the Bush presidency was a turning point whereby a long-term Republican majority could be created. (Why this would be good for the country is less clear.)

The article also, more or less, judges Rove as a failure. He pursued his idea, but it hasn't worked - and not just because of Iraq.

hand-wringing is a diplomatic regard towards the self
