I don't see a riddle. I am 90% sure your trouble is coming from the word stays.
stay:
1. Nautical. A heavy rope or cable, usually of wire, used as a brace or support for a mast or spar.
2. A rope used to steady, guide, or brace.
3. A strip of bone, plastic, or metal, used to stiffen a garment or part, such as a corset or shirt collar.
4. stays A corset
I don't know the context of the sentence so my less than educated guess is:
Fed-up with making stays (corsets), this sixteen-yr old future author preferred to sail with Death (as in Death, The Grim Reaper) on The Terrible (a ship).
