Can't remember the title! Casper...something

I have totally forgotten the name of a particular children's book - ditto the author. Various google searches have come up with nothing, and thus I yield myself to your experience

The book is a children's book, rather dark in places, probably for ages of about 8-12? The main character is calles Casper, or Caspar, I'm not sure which. He leaves home one day, and finds various street characters - one of whom is the King of the Street or something. Banoffee pie features in a very big way...
