Unauthorized sequel to Catcher in the Rye prohibited in U.S., Canada Six decades after “Catcher within the Rye” was first published, the book is nevertheless making headlines. ”Catcher within the Rye” still is sold more than most books and a Swede has tried to connect his book to its notoriety. J.D. Salinger sued before he died and his family has attained an agreement that bans the sale of the offending work in the United States and Canada.

J.D. Salinger having series ended

"Catcher within the Rye" introduced generations of literature students to Holden Caulfield, a disaffected teenager trying to figure out the meaning of his privileged life. In January 2010, Salinger died. The answers about Caulfield were never answered that numerous had at the end of the book. ”60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye” is how Swedish author Fredrik Colting answers those questions. The book was published in the U.K. in 2009 and is written to be a sequel to "Catcher in the Rye." Colting wrote the book under the pen name John David California which didn’t stop Salinger for suing Colting. Salinger's lawyers called Colting's unauthorized sequel "a rip-off, pure and simple."

U.S. sales of “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye” were blocked by a district court judge. The ruling was considered a book ban by numerous first amendment activists. The ruling showed that the copyright was being protected with a specific literary character from a single book as outlined by Copyright lawyers. The case got sent to trial following the ban was ordered and Colting won an appeal. Colting ended up settling with Salinger’s heirs. This was because Salinger died and they didn’t want to deal with court. The book can’t be dedicated to Salinger by Colting while references to “Catcher within the Rye” can’t exist. There can’t be the same title either. It has to change.

"Catcher within the Rye" still sells about 250,000 copies a year and has sold more than 35 million copies. The attention was just too much for Salinger after the book was published. He became a recluse after that. After that, only a few more novels were published when in 1965 the last was published. Over the years Salinger has refused to allow any film, stage or TV adaptations of "Catcher in the Rye.". Steven Spielberg was turned down by him. Book form is the only way that Holden Caulfield is known. Both the U.S. and Canada still read about him.
