This is one of my favorite and most beloved books. It is so well written that I have to force myself to not read it all in one sitting. It's underlying messages are profound and truly allow for self reflection. I have one question about a certain event in the book that I am having trouble understanding. If anyone can answer this or has some sort of idea, please let me know. Your responses are welcome. Okay, here is my question:
At the end of chapter 14 when Reuven concludes talking with Rav Gershenson after he read and gave a 3 class long explanation of a section in Talmud, Rav Gershenson privately asks Reuven to never use a certain method of explanation of Talmud in his class. Reuven was taught this method by his father. Reuven agrees and later looks up Rav Gershenson's name in the library. Then the books states "His name was not listed anywhere. It was then that I understood why my father was not teaching in this school."
Why did Potok write this? I am having trouble understanding this. What does Rav Gershenson's not being listed in the library have to do with Reuven's father not working at the college? It just seems like such a random statement. Any thoughts?
