Hello all!
You may have seen me already out there poking my head and my opinion in a few threads. I've found that when joining a new board it's easier for me to pop around for a bit before I post an intro thread, if nothing else, just to see what my comfort level is, and give myself time to figure out what the heck to put in said intro thread.

So... I'm new here, but I'm a forum vet, having been a member of another community for the last several years (I'm too lazy to go back over there and look at my join date). Hopefully I'm well trained enough not to do anything stupid here :D

Hrm. about me... I was bored when I was five, and driving my mother insane, so she went and got me a McGuffy reader, in hopes that I would finally sit still. It worked... sort of. I taught myself to read with that little book, and I've been a word junkie ever since. As a teen, I wouldn't even stop reading to go do whatever I needed to do next.. I just took the book along and took care of whatever it was. I've lost that talent as I've gotten older, I'm just no longer coordinated enough to do it anymore..... Although I am known around town for walking and reading at the same time.

As for college... well, I should have listened to my mother. Having worked in the school library for 3 years she told me to go into library science.. I told her that was a boring job and went for other things.... 4 majors, 2 dropouts, 2 colleges (both in which i worked in the Library for workstudy), and 2 babies later, I'm working as a library clerk in a small town, loving very minute of it, and looking into scholarships and grants so that i can get a Library Science degree..
...prolly shoulda listened to mom, I'm thinkin. hahaha

About my job: Since my library is in a tiny little town, there is only a staff of three... I'm the book club coordinator/liaison, Interlibrary loan chick, teen programming lady, reader's advisory person, flyer maker, magazine cataloger, googler, and computer troubleshooter. Plus the shelving, checkins, holds, and checkouts. I'm also the lady that calls and threatens to break your kneecaps if your books are late (just kidding) The other two ladies wear just as many different hats, and surprisingly, there is no drama and we all get along famously. (that, folks, is hard to find in ANY job)

I am one lucky woman.

Reading tastes are eclectic: some nonfiction depending on the topic, fantasy, mystery, humor, horror.. the only thing I really don't get into that much is the mainstream fiction and the chick lit.

Chick lit is easy to explain. I don't shop for fun, I have 2 pairs of shoes, I do not carry a purse, and I decapitated my barbies as a child and hid them under my bed before I went outside to climb a tree and read in it. And I refuse to wear a skirt in public.

Mainstream... I don't know... It's almost as if 'just a story' isn't enough for me. I have to have a murder, or a monster, or a magical power in there somewhere in order to be satisfied. I tried to read "Vinegar Hill" a few years ago and it left a bad taste in my mouth. If I wanted stories about 'real' dysfunctional people I'd call my Mom and ask how the family is doing.

....there are, of course, a few exceptions to those.

whoa. I seem to have rambled and babbled and stuff. oops. so I guess I'll just sign off for now and say "Glad to be here"

Hello Lily,

Welcome to the forum. I'm with you on the tree climbing (but i don't think i'll mention how many shoes I have  ).
How old are your children?
Which books have you found memorable and would recommend?

(how many pairs DO you have, out of curiosity? It's not that I look down on the shoe thing, I just don't get tempted. lol)

I have two stepdaughters, 15, and 13.
I have two sons, 10 (11 very soon) and 8
the oldest and the youngest live with us, the middle two are actually living their lives as 'only children' at their respective other parents houses.
15 is overly mature, going on about 40 or so
13 is my little jock, troublemaker, heartbreaker
11 is all heart, all boy, churchgoing and all around likeable guy
8 is my antisocial mad scientist. Smart as a whip, socially awkward, very senstive and a DRY sense of humor.

..I guess you just asked for ages, huh? lol

Memorable books. I'm just going with the 'off the top of my head' list, and these are the ones that I like so much it's hard NOT to shove them off on everyone who comes in looking for a read at work. These aren't all my top favorites (that list would take me a while to ponder, anyway.)

-Ella Minnow Pea - Mark Dunn
-Seventh Son - also the entire Alvin Maker Series - Orcon Scott Card
-Three Men in a Boat, Not To Mention the Dog - Jerome K. Jerome
but that one has to be read right before
-Not to Mention the Dog, or How We Found the Bishop's Bird Stump at Last - Connie Willis
-Wizard's First Rule , and most of the Sword of Truth series - Terry Goodkind
-Any of Christopher Moore's books (my personal favorite is Lamb, although I haven't read A Dirty Job yet)
-and Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves... I'm actually in the 'middle' of his Only Revolutions right now, and I'm not sure what to think yet.

You're.....it's you.....you mean....you.......call people about their late books and threaten to break their knee caps?  I always wondered how a person got that one.

Here's how it plays out in my town:

Me : (pitifully begging on my knees) "Here they are, I was just......reading them.

Librarian : "Dats the second time dis month Scotty."

Me : (In tears on my knees sobbing) "I know, please forgive me, I was reading....it will never happen again. Please, Tommy-two-reads, I have kids."

Librarian : (cracks knuckles, gives menacing stare) "You knows what happens to people like you who keep their books late. You're going to have to pay Scotty. People is talkin."

Me : (Just about losing every bodily function) "Please, no, not that-not the fine!."

Librarian:"You needs to pay up Scotty, or else...."

Me: "Look, I'll bring you over a turkey, your favorite wine. You..you...you like cigars? Cohiba? I've got a few.

Librarian: "Why didn't ya say soz!"

Me: "I'll be right back...all good then?"

Librarian: "FUGHEDABOUDIT!"

;) Welcome to the forum, you definitely have your own flavor to add to the forum, which is a good thing.:)

Hiya Lily, welcome aboard! Our library lady who tracks down late books isn't the "break your kneecaps" sort..although that might be the kinder option:rolleyes: She goes to church with me, and will corner me in the foyer or the ladies' room, wherever..and will hound me about my grown kids's late books. I thought once a child reached legal adulthood the parents were off the "hound to death" list, but not with Dot! She will even hound the kids about their siblings' books-like they have any sort of control over them:p

Details are good - in fact they are encouraged. All the children sound like quite the characters.

I loved Three Men in a Boat as well - but have not read the Connie Willis book - will add it to my list.

Terry Goodkind? As you'll be able to see from Stewarts link, he has provided us with quite a bit of amusement. If you have enjoyed his books then that's fair enough - although if you tell us that you're also a member at his forum, then we may have to lock you in this thread and deprogram you :D .

OMG, this is a riot.:D :D :D You should remind her that the devil isn't to be on God's territory during sundays.;)

well... I DO belong to that forum, but I don't even remember my login and password, that's how long it's been since I've gone in. I don't care for that place much. Way too much unconditional love over there.
I can't get that 'quotes' link to work, I'll have to try again later.

oh, and I try to make it a point not to break kneecaps, or chat overdues, with people when I'm off the clock. However, it seems that I can't take a walk around town without someone stopping me to ask me to place a hold or something.. ;)

You need a button to put on when you clock out. It can read, "Do I LOOK like I'm on the clock?" That's silly to expect you to remember their request when you aren't at work. Tell them to send you an email since you have to have the request in writing so as to get the info just right..otherwise they're liable to receive "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" instead of "The Life of Hannibal":D

Hmm, I guess you're alright then - but I've got my eye on you...:D :D

Behold our Terry Goodkind Quotes thread!

I know what I thought about that. Back on the shelf you go.

the TG links are hysterical. The thing with his books... I don't like him, I don't like his fans, the writing is, at the core, absolute crap. BUT. I like Zedd, because he is a crotchety old goofy guy, and the shameless romantic in me actually really really likes the concept of a man moving heaven and earth for love. Thats the only appeal for me. The Romance angle. HAHA!

I'm beginning to agree about OR. It's not due for a week or two, though, I may give it a few more tries before I give up and send it back.

A belated but very warm welcome Lily. You are a lady after my own heart - spare me the chick-lit, the high-heel shoes and the tight skirts.
I own one pair of high-heel/stiletto type shoes, don't know why I don't throw them away. Tottering along in public, grabbing at random strangers when you turn an ankle, is not a good look. As for tight skirts, you go to take a decent stride down a curb and end up lurching forward and nearly land flat on your face. Designed by men I'm sure. ;)
