Chickens coming home to roost

In the time that we have lived in our fourth-floor walk-up, we have accumulated 2,000 books. It was all so gradual and easy, but now we have to move them.

Any advice, tips, commiseration?

Thanks.

I can commiserate, I just moved a few hundred overseas. I got off somewhat easy in they were packed and carried for me I just had to put them away when they got here but my spare room/office/library is much smaller than my last one.

Spread them out amongst your other packing. Books are heavy and no one wants to live a box full of books. I was all organised when we moved. All the books together. Big mistake. Big heavy mistake.

If you can hire one of those trolleys that can 'walk' down stairs you'll make your life a lot easier. Or better still pay someone else to do it.

Go to your local big-box bookstore and harass them for boxes. The box sizes aren't too large and they'll have additional packing materieals for you. The couriers won't lift boxes over a certain weight so only so many books are packed per box. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies. The idea of spreading the books out was a good one, except that we own more books than anything else. We'd end up distributing the other stuff among the books instead.

We're going with small boxes, quite a few of them in fact. About a hundred I think.

At one point, we hoped we would get rid of a significant number of books, but we're always weeding our collection anyway, even if our home doesn't look like it. So we're packing them all and it's been kind of fun--handling every one of them, being reminded of what we have, discussing them, reminiscing about some of our great finds at flea markets, etc. Heard most often: "I really should read that again."
