I read a book many many years ago (1977) when I was in 5th grade about three siblings (1 boy, two girls) who decide to walk home (it takes weeks)when their parents don't return from a day trip when they are on vacation. Does anyone know anything about the book

This is a long shot, but could this be Walkabout, by James Vance Marshall?

"Two urban children (14 year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy)) are stranded in the Australian desert when their father committed suicide. When food and water nearly run out, they meet an Aborigine boy on 'walkabout': a ritualistic banishment from his tribe. With his help, two children manage to survive. And they continue to walk with him."


Do you remember what country your book was set in? Do you remember any events from the book?

Could it be Cynthia Voight? Not sure about the English title, possibly Homecoming. One character is called Dicey.

The book took place in the US I believe. The journey was not through the wilderness but was through some rural areas. I beleive the boy adopted a white rather large dog along the way
