christopher street day or pride parades

do you know or have a christopher street day or pride parades? and if you do what do you think?

No, we don't. We don't have Pride here either. The Gay people all cluster in Northampton to get away from the rednecks where I live. I'm sure that Northampton has Pride Days, and I'm all for it. I've never been, but it is more because I try to avoid Northampton when it is crowded than anything else. I was a member of PFLAG for a while in college, so I went to some of the Pride stuff put on by the Stonewall Center at UMASS.

**Good call on the edit. I had to look up Christopher Street Day because I didn't realize that was what they called Pride in a lot of places.

we have like a big parade in germany and with every year, it becomes more and more fun and not only gay people go, but people who want to have fun. They are all dressed up in pink fur and purple hair, it's quite intersting.

Yea, that's pretty much what Pride is like too. I'm not a lesbian and I always had a great time at the events I went to.

i think it's rather cool, specially since they got rid of the LOVE PARADE, what totally sucks, because that was one of the only yearly demonstrations that were peaceful.

Nothing formal here in my small town in Canada, but back in Australia there's the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which is always a riot of colour and fun. It's generally televised, although I'd love to go some year.

Not until little Johnny stops being a lapdog to a certain Superpower.

Dammit! No politics, eh? Oh well - you probably don't know who little Johnny is, anyway.

We have pride festivals here. A lot of guys with buzz cuts dress in tight tank tops and jeans shorts (the homosexual community can be so traditional).

I believe that the message of the festival is to proclaim the right to exist and put more importance on sexual orientation rather than claiming that homosexuals are like normal heterosexuals. Despite that most probably are parodies of stereotypes not all homosexuals appreciate the flamboyant and sexualised image that they are creating.

Is christopher street day a celebration of a specific street or does it have a whole different meaning?

Vancouver has a very large gay community and there's a Gay Pride Week including a huge parade. The mayor, civic and provincial politicians participate. It's a really fun, open event for everyone - gay or not.

People come from all over the world to attend. And since same-sex marriage is legal here, there has been a recent influx of gay and lesbian couples who come for Gay Pride and also arrange to get married while they're here.

Christopher Street is a street in Manhattan that was the site of the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar. In the late 60's the bar's patrons were harrassed by the police, leading to rioting. Look here if you'd like more information.

thanks i didn't know that, i just know that it is a festival or a parade for gay people, lesbians, and tranvestites in Berlin. It is every year at the same day and they celebrate themselves but recently a lot of "straight" poeple go too and have a ball... anyway is kinda Loveparade Style.

Makes sense that it turned out to be more than a local "celebration". Streets aren't celebrated much otherwise.

The interesting thing is that Germany is the only place I know of that has Christopher Street Day. Everywhere else it is Pride, even in New York.

Since Washington is the capital, the Pride Festival here is heavy on politics, and more serious than in other cities. Still, it is a time to renew the sense of community. My husband and I volunteer each year. It was just last weekend and we are still feeling the glow.

my hometown supposedly has the most homosexuals per capita but it is still a very, conservative town, even the gay community really. there was talk of a gay pride parade but it got nixed and i think the mayor at the time had something to do with it and it caused a bit of national scandal. fredericton rarely makes the news.
