contacting authors

how do you contact authors? imean, if they have no officials ite, how do you write to them? i tried going on their publishers sites and finding an adress, but is there a site with specific adresses where the mail could be forwarded? have you ever tried contactng an author?

If every fan wrote to his or her favorite author, that author would spend all his or her time reading letters from fans, and would no longer have time to write.

I've written letters to a lot of authors. Most of them have been emails because the author has their email on their official site. I've also talked with a few who had profiles on tribe.net

Just about every one of the has been really appreciative of the letter.

It completely depends on the author. An e-mail or letter to Salman Rushdie or Kurt Vonnegut will likely go unanswered. But lesser known or up and coming authors probably revel in each letter. I've contacted a number of authors, and most of my inquiries went unanswered. But it's always worth a try. One possible avenue for contact is through the author's publisher.

Is Barbara Kingsolver the author you want to contact? :)

If you are having trouble finding an e-mail, post office, or home address for an author, most likely they do not want to be contacted.

If the address isnt publicly avaiable on a website somewhere its probably because they dont want to be contacted by random people. You can probably get their publisher to forward mail to them, but dont expect a reply.

*Edit*
I checked the publisher for you. From http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/faq.htm#contactauthor :

Q. How do I get in contact with a Random House author/copyright holder?

A. First check to see if the author includes any contact details on their website in our list of author sites. If not, so as to protect the privacy of an author, we are not permitted to give out author contact details under any circumstances. If you wish to contact an author please do so BY LETTER ONLY and send it the author c/o Publicity Department, Random House, 20 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V 2SA. Your letter will be forwarded to them immediately if we have their details on record. If an author's books are now out of print, we are unlikely to still have their details. To contact an author in these circumstances is as difficult as it is to contact any private individual. Perhaps an experienced genealogist or detective agency could help!

Q. Can I email a Random House author/copyright holder?
A. No, not unless they have publicised their email address on their website as above. We are unable to forward emails. To contact the author you will need to write as above.
