cooking and cuisine

Since we seem to be having a fair few food related threads, I thought I would create one too! :D

Cooking is another one of my big passions. As mentioned by a couple of others here, I cook everything from scratch. I detest pre-packaged plastic ready meals. They are disgusting!

For me, cooking is an interest. I am always learning new things and really enjoy the art of cooking. I like the creation and the synergy of ingredients. For me, it's also a quality of life issue. I think it's really sad that a lot of countries don't cook any longer but live on fast food junk and and "ready meals" If I am going to eat then I want to eat something that is good tasting AND good for me! I don't want something that's full of additives and chemical slime with maybe 3 vegetables in it if you are lucky!

There are two great myths with cooking for yourself.

Firstly, it takes too long to cook
Secondly, it's too expensive.

Neither of those are true! Cooking is by FAR cheaper than buying convenience food. Of course you can cook to suit your budget. Also, you don't have to cook things that take a long time. I can make something good in 15 - 20 minuets. I normally cook something more time consuming and extravagant on a weekend or day off. Is 15 - 20 minutes really too much time out of your life to cook? 15 minutes away from the TV is well spent preparing something tasty and healthy! :)

So... who else enjoys cooking? What is your favourite world cuisine, favourite dishes, and so on? :)

i love to cook. love it. growing up in a restaurant probably helped that, but also travelling and trying new foods were huge contributors.
i am big on becoming self sufficient. we until recently had our own chickens. my mom raised on beef cow a season and my brother in law does pork, so it was very nice knowing where our food was coming from. also chickens are brilliant for keeping the bug pop in check and are hilarious to watch.
sadly we live in town and i don't thing our neighbours would appreciate free range birds scratching up their flower beds and pooping on the lawns.

I love to cook in all cuisines, no definite favorites. But my comfort foods are spicy! Tarka Dal, Aloo Gobi. Last night I made German food, night before Thai curry, tonight Indian.

The best food that I can't make myself at home is really top-quality sushi and sashimi. I can, of course, make the basic maki rolls and some okay fish, but not the variety and quality that you need. So that's what I like to have when I eat out.

Also, I think Mexican food is underrated and misunderstood in most places outside Mexico. It's as refined and varied and wonderful as any cuisine, but the proliferation of bad Mexican and Tex-Mex has killed its reputation. They can do amazing things with piggies.

I like to cook. I do the majority of the cooking in my household, although hubby was a cook for ten years. Being a stay-home-mom (very flexible work schedules), I really have no reason not to cook every day. I learned how to really cook from my mother-in-law. She lives next door and cooks for her whole family every other Sunday. I can make some dishes she's taught me almost as well as she makes them!!

I am an adventurous eater and love international cuisine.

I HATE cooking.
I can settle for junk food as long as I can skip the horrible cooking part. I'm a big fan of ordering pizza over the internet. I love to eat a good meal as long as I don't have to make it.
I eat so I wont starve and thats about as far as it gets for me. Would have been nice if my roommate liked cooking.

:D Someone else like us!

I enjoy cooking and since I'm vegan, I am pretty much have to cook, most of the time. Thanks to Boca/Amy's/other veg-friendly frozen foods, I can survive on lazy days.

Lately, I've really gotten into baking. Vegan biscuits and "cheese"cake are my current specialties. Thanks to cookbooks, I'm improving with every recipe I try.

If I only had more time to practice.

what did you make??

oh and my all time favorite is still chinese and japanese!! i like indian food too, except for the mint sauce, that was a little bit disgusting!!

i like cooking but with baking i can create... :D

i can't say i love or enjoy cooking, but i love the end result so it's worth it.

my favorite meal to make at home is grilled salmon with garlic buttered asparagus and mashed potatos. we usually start with a salad at every meal, and my favorite salad is the basic: lettuce, tomato, avocado and onion, sometimes i throw in some cheeze cubes. i guess this sounds bland to some of you guys, but my guts can't take the spices. :(

My German meal was roast pork, sauerkraut with sauteed onions, boiled new potatoes, steamed broccoli. Not fancy. I was working all day. :)
