Dan Millman: Way Of The Peaceful Warrior

it'll knock your socks off, cassandra. ;) it is very similar to the story of vernon turner, who wrote several books on zen. he discovered his 'center' from a sensei in new york city who taught him how to sit; from that experience he found complete harmony in the universe. afterwards he went around helping people, fighting off attackers and rapists, even though he had never taken a martial arts class in his life (and what's more, he did it all with one finger). he never hurt anybody, though; he loved everyone, both victim and victimizer. he was merely immobilizing anyone who tried to assault another person, lay them down gently on the ground. rumors started to spread and people from all over came to test vernon turner's strength, and for a while he would accept any fight, day or not. it was always the same thing, someone would come at him using force, and vernon turner would find the point where they were off-center and tap it, sending them tumbling across the floor. it was never a matter of strength. at one point he fought off six black belts simultanesouly, blindfolded and with one finger. what he was doing was impossible, but he demonstrated it to people over and over again. he was just like a comic book superhero.

Do you have stinky feet? Do you have more than ten toes? Do you have in-grown toe nails? Do you have toe jam? Do you have sand paper like feet? Do you have less than ten toes?

I just picked up a copy of this today. I shall get to it when I come down.

Very interesting but, sorry, I find all that very difficult to beiieve :) How do you know it's true?

the reporters who documented it were twice as skeptical as you are.

anyway, if there's a lesson here it's that we don't know anything. there's your first lesson in zen.

I'm not trying to be dick :) I am simply interested, and so in the spirit of debate!

Thease reporters? Would they be independent or quoted in this book he wrote?

Second: how the hell do you beat 6 blackbelts when you have a blind fold on? I'm sorry that's just NOT possible. Martial arts is al about reading your opponent! How can you read your opponent if you are wearing a blind fold? AND not only that, ANYBODY would have trouble beating six black belts if they were blind folded or not. INot only THAT, with one finger? COME ON??? find that every difficult if not impossible to believe.

thanks, enema ... I was just gonna send him there.

wabbit, vernon turner never claimed to do anything like that. well, at least he himself never did. at some point he experienced a total breakdown and lost his identity, and more importantly, his ego--his sense of self. what he did was impossible, you're right. but he wasn't the one doing it. he is everything, he is you. there is no self ... we are all one.

I know that must sound kind of spiritual, but it's not. when you abandon thought, all that is left is consciousness. it's not a matter of belief: if you don't believe in god you're just as dependent on faith and reason as any churchman. thoughts are tools we've used to survive, they're a product of the mind. but the mind wants to hold onto everything ... that's why we cling to our possessions, our friends, our religions and our bodies. it's the sole cause of all our fears. we fear pain, loss and death. but when you stop and just look at it for a second, and you begin to ask yourself, "who is feeling the pain?"; "what is lost?"; "who dies?" ... you realize that you are causing the fear. you're afraid of losing your identity. but one way or another it's going to happen. your identity will die and you will have wasted your life living in fear.

Ok, just read what the linky contains :)

I'm sorry, I nave NEVER read such a pile of crap in my whole life! The bit where he goes and bits up a load of really evil new york gang memebers and their leader who is a a killer, apparently, gets out of prison and challenges him to a fight. Vernon says, "OK but I'm gonna take you to pieces." The gang leader comes over and hugs him!? HILARIOUS! that would NEVER happen. I may not understand enlightenment but I understand people. That guy would just shoot him. He would lose face by not fighting him and it would NEVER happen.

Sorry, the whole damn thing is a mountian of crap :) That guy lives in a fantasy world.

1.) you're looking at one part of it, not the whole ... are you sure it would never happen?

2.) the reality is, you don't know.

You know, he is still alive. I'm sure you could find a way to contact him; why don't you write him a letter and ask him, yourself.
