It's not often that I read Christmas-themed books, but as I enjoy Sedaris' work I knew Holidays on Ice couldn't be passed up. Unlike most of his other collections, HoI is a mixture of both nonfiction pieces and short stories. As much as I loved the infamous Santaland Diaries my favorite story in this collection was Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol. That story consists of reviews of grade-school pageants written by a snarky theater critic. Anyone who's had to attend a school play should be able to understand exactly where Mr. Bristol is coming from . The only tale I really didn't care for was Christmas Means Giving. It just seemed tamer than the rest of the stories.
One note: the hardcover version is an expanded edition containing such stories as The Monster Mash and Jesus Shaves. There's even a new piece called The Cow and the Turkey, which is only so-so.
