Now this isn't edible, but something that quite honestly blew my socks off (from a technical standpoint). I think it's pure genius, and gosh I wished someone came up with something like that for me.

Check out Delicious Library and scream in frustration - unless you're a Mac user.

I'm not a Mac user, but I wouldn't want to take the time to scan all my books, manga, music CDs, Videos, DVDs, PC games, and console games. I don't even have barcodes for everything - a lot of my books are old used books without dust jackets.

You won't hear any screaming from my direction.

I'm a mac user, but I'm cheap :) If I ever decide to spend the money, though, this is definitely somethingI could use.

Renee, but this is different! You see, we've all seen barcode indexing using barcode scanners. You know, the one that zaps the barcode on the stuff you buy in supermarkets. It's great, it's useful. But this guy... this guy can scan and interpret barcodes via a digital image (in this case, using iSight).

This means that someday, if you're so inclined, you can take your PDA/phone with a built in camera, walk around your house, snap a pic of your book's barcode and instantly have it indexed in your PDA's catalogue software.

In fact, this is doable right now, except for the barcodes via digital image, which is a little more difficult at present.

I'd buy something like this at a modest price.

Chewie, I'd think there are plenty of catalogue software right now that's free for the Mac. You'd have to type a lot, though... :)

direstraits - you might want to sit down for this.

I don't use either a PDA or a camera phone. I still use one of those ancient books to log appointments, important dates, and phone numbers. I do have a cell phone but it's a prepaid that costs me about $20 every two or three months depending on how many calls I make. I don't use a phone to socialize - that's what god invented the internet for.

Still, I have a lot of stuff that doesn't even have barcodes, old stuff.

I think I'll go play with my film camera now. :p

What? A film camera? [falls violently from chair]

Nah, I don't have a camera phone either. My cell phone is purely that. It makes calls. It doesn't even tell me the name of who text-messaged me.

It's just that it's exciting (for me) to see such a technology - putting barcode reading in our hands.

When I get such a technology I'll scan anything that looks remotely like a barcode. I imagine I'll giggle like a girl when the numbers flash out on my screen.

p.s. by the way, since god invented the internet for socializing, how did you socialize before people could even spell 'Internet'? :)

This is really cool, ds. It reminds me of the barcode scanner things they have in the music section of Borders back home. You just scan the barcode and the CD will be automatically recognised and bring up sample tracks for you to listen to. I browse for all my CDs there... and then go buy them somewhere cheaper! :D

Now that is too cool. Beats going to designated listening stations with only set number of CDs to listen to.

I'm use your tactics too... Borders sell CDs at too high a price. :)
