Do you have a favorite publisher?

Odd question I guess, and I suppose I mean it more for republished books than anything else, but when I'm reading Shakespeare I make a point to find a Signet Classics version, and for classics I like the Barnes&Noble editions. The former is for the footnotes and format, the latter for the endnotes and wealth of background information included.

Your favorites?

Personally, I buy the edition of the book that has the best cover. But that's just how I am. If you were asking about if I liked a specific publisher as in what books they publish, I'd have to say Tor Fantasy.

When I was in school, they usually recommended Norton Critical Editions for classes as the notes and articles were good, or at least extensive.

Don't know that I personally have a favorite, though with the older ones I gravitate toward Penguin classics - the translations (when necessary) are pretty good and the type and paper aren't irritating.

I will consider who the publisher is when deciding on an author I haven't read before - I'm much more likely to trust someone who is published by Vintage, for instance.

There are lots of great used-book stores near me, so I usually am able to get a hardcover of either classics or modern novels. The Franklin Library editions of classics are great--finest paper, gold leaf edging, fake morocco binding, usually with a ribbon/marker. They feel silky. I also love boxed books, so I buy them when I see them, just to keep. In general, I don't like paperbacks, but Picador's are well made.
