Does anybody recognise a book from this description?

It is set on an island with a tribe untouched by the modern world, no loos, no electricity, no money etc. A journalist lands there and lives amongst them. Spiritual too, as every night they gather in the community tent to smoke drugs and talk with their dead relatives.
Bit of a mystery and love story too. Any clue to the name and author. Not that it might help but the copy I read had a black and white graphic designed cover.
