Can anyone help me identify a book I looked at briefly then lost my note of title and author? It's a mystery. The setting is Britain, time uncertain. The story involves a pair of investigators. She is high society and welcomed in homes all over London. He, on the other hand is a commoner, perhaps even a policeman, and must go 'round to the servant's entrance. It may be one of a series of mysteries by the author. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the Mrs. Bradley mystery series by Gladys Mitchell, which was also made into a TV series starring Diana Rigg.

Could you be looking for an Anne Perry series? I believe she has two series set in the Victorian Era. One is the William Monk series and the other is the Charlotte & Thomas Pitt series.

Thank you one and all!

Thank you one and all, novella, mehastings, and Miss Shelf! I'll sure check out the stories by Gladys Mitchell and Anne Perry. Your prompt response to my query is much appreciated! Vern

This is an OLD thread, but I came across another series that might fit it, and figured I'd post the info just in case. The author is Marion Chesney (who is also M.C. Beaton) the series is about Captain Henry Cartwright and Lady Rose Summer. The first book is Snobbery with Violence. I haven't read the books yet, so I'm not sure, but it seems to fit the bill.
