Well, back after my week off from work and I managed to clear eight and a half books from my backlog of almost 300 . And some of them were really decent as well!
I read:
Carbonel - Barbara Sleigh (kiddie's book that I won off ebay. Read the sequel when I was a child and never realised that it was the second book until I found the first recently. Stormed through it).
The Seeing Stone - Kevin Crossley-Holland (another kiddie's book - intriguing little story, the first in a trilogy about Arthur. I liked it, but probably not enough to read the others).
The Magician's Guild - Trudi Canavan (the first in a new fantasy trilogy by an Australian author. I really really enjoyed this, it was a great yarn, and fairly fast-paced. Basic premise is that slum people are not allowed into the Magician's Guild and are not tested for magic therefore. Each year the slum people are Purged from the main city. During this Purge a young slum girl penetrates their magical shield using *gasp* magic! Some of it is desperately cliched, but fun).
The Novice - Trudi Canavan (this second book reminded me both of Harry Potter and Tamora Pierce's Alanna series. Still very good fun, though, and I'm looking forward to the third).
The fourth Charlaine Harris book (I'm damned if I can remember the title! It isn't out officially in England - I got it from a shop specialising in fantasy imports. I *love* these stories and this was no different. So much fun and ever so easy to read).
The Other Side of the Story - Marian Keyes (My obligatory girly book for the holiday, and very nice it was too. Three storylines impacting on one another, based in the world of publishing).
Under the Duvet - Marian Keyes (a collection of essays written for magazines. Entertaining and bite-sized).
The Assassin's Apprentice - Robin Hobb (I actually tried picking this up when I was much younger and was unable to get into it. However, I like to give things a second go, and was drawn into the world of Fitz, the royal bastard. I loved this!)
And part way through the second Assassin book (Royal Assassin) by Robin Hobb...
It's been the best kind of holiday - totally relaxed and lots of reading!
