English Project!: Underdogs in Love

Hi Guys and Gals

I'm a high school student, recently assigned a research project on a
literature theme, and I chose to do one called "Underdogs in Love". Within
the theme, I am suppose to find examples, and explain why and how they are
underdogs and set many examples almost as if it was a thesis paper or
something. Society loves the underdogs, and specifically ones who overcome
difficulties to get the guy/girl they always wanted. Examples are like
"Beauty and The Beast", "Cinderella", "A Tale Of Two Cities", etc.

I did much research on the net and couldn't come up with much info on many
stories/opinions. I know so many in here read so much, I was so happy to come across this forum. I was wondering if anyone here had
any other examples about Underdogs in Love, and/or why they are considered
the "Underdog". I don't want to be stuck with all sappy, Disney stories! ANY
HELP OR EXAMPLES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I figured I'd better post in
here and try and get a bit of info then not try at all.

Thanks a lot all for any of your possible responses! It would mean a lot!

Anthem by Ayn Rand which I recently read might fit. It is a starkly political short novel (maybe too short?) set in a futuristic totalitarian society, and the characters and issues are drawn in black and white, so one can't possibly miss what they are. And yes two people manage find their way to love anyway.
Hope this helps,
Peder

PS The reader reviews on amazon.com are a good place to check what a books sounds like, and many readers have created topical lists. If you go looking, there may already be a ready-made list for you.

Here's a link to Annie Proulx's short story Brokeback Mountain, on which the new film is based. It's a wonderful story, though for high school may be a little rich.

Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are more obvious choices.

Caliban from The Tempest is the classic underdog who doesn't get the love he wants. Along the same likes is Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame--a real underdog.

Then there's the lighter side of things, like Bridget Jones's Diary. Guess she's a bit of an underdog, at least in her own eyes.

wow!

Wow! Thanks guys this is absolutly fantastic. Keep em' coming :)

And Kenny, I truely understand, haha I'm not looking for anyone to do this for me. I'm happy to read the topics and do the research, just I read maybe 2 books a month for maybe 5 years of my life, whereas so many others here read 10x that and have such a broader knowledge of the subject.

I'm extremely impressed so far, and have many books on my list to study!
So far, so many are underdogs beacase of social classes/family conflicts.
I'm trying to spread it out so that the underdogs arn't all underdogs for the same reason. I've gotten 1 or 2 because of physical apperance and 1 because of low self-esteem, lack of confidence. Any underdog in love is good!

Thanks all...

Just a suggestion, but you might want to look again at your "sappy Disney stories". None of them were written by Disney, and the original stories are not the same as the Disney cartoons you are thinking about. Give them a read, I think you'll be suprised.

Mmm. Perhaps Kinky Friedman's books. He's in love with a much younger woman who abuses him in an amusing way (I think so as I am female).
