ever read a book compiled of letters from a fan to a baseball player?

I read a great book a few years ago (i think it's fiction but it may be based on a true story) that starts out with a young boy writing a fan letter to a baseball star. the boy gets an impersonal response and so he writes back. The star quickly and vaguely responds, but the correspondance continues and they become friends and grow old together though these letters. need the title or the author. thank you for your help.
