Like a lot of people, I'm trying to find a book without much info. I read the book in high school, around 1994-95. Here's the vague plot details I can remember:
-The backstory was that every generation, or 100 years or so, there was a battle between good and evil. It was a one on one battle between a hero and anti-hero. I think it was the same hero and anti-hero each time, being reborn as an apparently normal person, living and growing up, and then seeking each other out for the battle. I think there was a third character, either a teacher/mentor for the hero or a neutral observer, but I'm not sure.
-The main story was set in modern times, the present day of when the book was written (fairly confident it fell some time in 1960s-80s.) But the more I think about it there may have been some short memories or flashbacks to previous lives and battles.
-In this current chapter of the fight, the hero is still a little boy when the anti-hero, an adult, finds him, so it's an uphill fight. I should mention that I keep saying battle and fight but that's generalizing. There's more involved than just a physical fight, otherwise the anti-hero could just walk up and wring the kid's neck. Instead he's plotting and scheming much of the time. It's possible there's even a designated time for the actual battle that they have to wait for. These are all details that are hazy.
-One thing that stands out is that the hero has a smooth upper lip instead of an indentation. The book explains that when people are born, an angel presses a finger to the baby's lips and says "Shhh" so that the baby won't tell all the secrets it knows, but the hero is allowed to remember.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
