Fiction book on social networking or connected society?

I am doing an assignment for a class where part of it includes finding an example in fiction writing on my topic. My topic is on social networking, and the various ways we as a society are "connected." Can anyone help me out with some ideas on any books that exemplify these themes?
Thank you for your help/input!

Well, there's the Bonfire of the Vanities (Tom Wolf) example, in which the main character's life falls apart and he loses all his social connections because he makes a big mistake and lies about it, and things get worse from there. Set in NYC in the 80s, among the rich and very rich.

Then there's the Lord of the Flies kind of example, in which kids create their own society based on what they have experienced so far in life.

There are a lot of ways to go with that idea. Do you mean social cliques and groups? There's also the literature of gangs, like The Outsiders.

If you want to go the wholesome route, there are the Little House on the Prairie books that say a lot about early American settlements.

if you are a stephen king fan, the stand is a great example of how society would regroup after a global disaster. there is a plague that wipes out like 95% of the earth's population in a matter of weeks and little pockets of people are left. they are each drawn to 2 new cities, one good, and one evil. it deals with how these 2 societies restructure themselves and who are the most important people in these new societies.

Sorry, probably should have clarified. I am approaching this from a modern technological point of view; mass media, internet, cell phone, etc. I just picked up Turn of the Century by Kurt Anderson, this may have some useful information in it. Thanks for the help.
