Fight Club, copy of a copy?

I couldn't find Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk at my local library soo I downloaded a pdf instead.
On page 86 it reads:

[...]Freon to shatter lock cylinders w > they could dangle

and a bit further down:

and the police shout I ()r everyone to please get back,

Is the "w >" and "()r" supposed to be there to represent the 'copy of a copy' thing, or is it the pdf that is a copy of a copy of a copy?

I think maybe it's a bad scan of it.
