First Socialist Senator

Bernie's been in the House of Representatives for years. He wasn't necessarily swept in due to the issues. James Jeffords, an independent, retired and the Republican party is dead in the water in that state. NE is a rather odd area and their representatives are just as interesting as the voters themselves. The electing of Jeffords, Sanders, Lieberman, and Olympia Snowe are purely do to geographical aberration.

I don't think that this is going to make a drop in the bucket, nor does it signify that socialism is going to sweep the country (not that I would mind). Bernie Sanders is popular in Vermont. He has been, and continues to be. I think his election to the Senate has more to do with the people in that state trusting him and his political past than it does with his party of choice. Yes, Vermont is a liberal state, but I don't think it is leaning toward socialism as a whole.
