Freak Waves

I found this article. I found this strange and interesting, and so thought I would share it with you. Freak waves spotted from space

This is from the article

The shady phenomenon of freak waves as tall as 10 storey buildings has finally been proved, the European Space Agency (Esa) said on Wednesday.
Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously but, until now, no one quite believed them.

As part of a project called MaxWave - which was set up to test the rumours - two Esa satellites surveyed the oceans.

During a three week period they detected 10 giant waves, all of which were over 25m (81ft) high.

81ft high????

And this...

Strange disapearances

Over the last two decades more than 200 super-carriers - cargo ships over 200m long - have been lost at sea. Eyewitness reports suggest many were sunk by high and violent walls of water, that rose up out of calm seas.

200 in 2 decades??? that's A LOT! That's a damn lot of ships to go missing.

I just found this so intresting because of the sense of wonder that it instilled in me, and also it I like it because it changes the way I view the world. I mean, 200 ships vanishing at sea? How strange! You would think that nobody would sail!

** EDITED TO REMOVE STUPID COMMENTS FROM ME :D **

2 decades is 20 years. That's 1040 weeks. That's 0.192 ships a week. Makes me wonder how reliable a report that is.

Totally off topic, but the title reminded me of it... shall I wear my hair curly or straight this weekend I wonder? Observe how my life is filled with groundbreaking issues.

The report is reliable. If you looked at it, you would see it's from the BBC and it links to the ESA website.

Having said that, it's me that is not reliable! After I posted I thought about it and wondered how the HELL I came up with 2 ships a week! The report says no such thing  I put it down to a sleepy brain lol

Good find, Wabbit - fascinating, walls of water, 81 ft high, rising up out of calm water. What a brilliant (and utterly frightening) sight that must be for the witnesses!

Cheers

Thanks!

Yeah, amazing! It says in the article that recently a passenger liner got hit by one of those waves. All of the windows were shattered and they were without power or propulsion for a few days!

The world is full of wonder. Anybody that says magic does not exist is lying or blind :)

There is mention in the article about 2 ships missing every week:

"'Two large ships sink every week on average,' said Wolfgang Rosenthal, of the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht, Germany. "But the cause is never studied to the same detail as an air crash. It simply gets put down to 'bad weather'."

You were not so sleepy after all :)

I used to love watching the storm waves when I was younger - seeing 20 - 30 ft waves breaking 10ft away is amazing!

Ok maybe 200 ships, but I doubt if there's even been 200 Super Carriers that have existed....Sure you didn't cheat the words a little?
