Game: post-apocalypse survival

The idea for this thread was shamelessly taken from another forum.

In the event of a non-zombie related apocalyptic disaster:

1. What three items would you take with you?

2. If you had to choose one person to accompany you whom would it be?

3. What would be your plan of action?

For the purposes of this thread, let us say that the disaster is a Deep Impact type scenario where large fragments from a comet hit the Earth in the Atlantic and Pacific causing tsunamis that reach 50-100 miles inland and a few fragments that randomly pepper the continents. Antarctica and India emerge relatively unscathed.

My answers:

1. I would take a dependable, easy to maintain rifle and ample ammunition, a good knife, and a big box of waterproof matches.

2. I would bring along Les Stroud or his female equivalent. I just hope he will be better at finding food than he was on his TV show.

3. We would head South for more temperate climates, scavenge whatever else we might need, and hope to hook up with a larger group of likewise motivated people. Setting up a fortress at Walmart might be an interesting idea if there were enough people to hold it.

1. Huge, watertight bag of certain herbs; huge, watertight bag of rolling papers; knife.

2. Large dog.

3. Hook up with other survivors. Be indispensible. Charge. Invest surplus wisely.

Of course, this plan never works out in apocalypse movies, but then again neither do any of the others...

Assuming that clothes and shoes are a given and already included:

1. large magnesium rod with flint striker attached, one-piece hand-held pick axe made of solid steel, Leatherman multi-tool.

2. brilliant doctor who minored in forestry and auto mechanics.

3. I'm just about 100 miles from the gulf coast as the crow flies, so I'd essentially be pretty set in my location. I'd probably try to make my way about 50 miles northeast to avoid the brunt of any possible hurricanes in the following years. Try to pick up survivors along the way and create a colony. Scavenge as much twine, rope and string as we could find along with all manner of hand-held farming tools. Perfect the art of making bows and arrows for defense and hunting.

1. Swiss army knife, a lighter and a jar of coconut oil (surprisingly useful stuff...)

2. I would choose the Doctor to accompany me, preferably in his tenth incarnation.

3. The plan is to stick close to the Doctor. He'll save the day. And if he doesn't, well at least he's easy on the eyes!

See? You learned something new today.

As an aside, have you noticed that in these type of questions, people never say they will bring a survival guide?
