Genres

Hi guys,

Having a natural dislike of genres, aka pigeon holes, I got to thinking that there must be a better way. So just for a bit of fun I knocked up something called a GenrePlex. It's a long way from perfect but if you're interested maybe you could suggest improvements. Find out more here

It's a nice idea. But, by making a limited number of categories, you are taking the pigeonhole from being black and white into the realm of many shades of grey.

I think that tags are best for describing content on sites such as listal and librarything.

I don't get it. I tried very hard to understand how to adjust bits of the wheels - which were very hard to read, by the way. And then the descriptions of axis and weight, and facets just threw me completely. The facet descriptions were unnecessary, as well: we all know what 'romantic' or 'horror' means.

So what does it do? Is this just an overly complicated and fussy way of 'tagging' something?

Quite a lot of effort for something that is just for fun.

The dark green is very annoying.

Yup, take your point Stewart. The thing with tags is that they are limitless and undefined. This is kind of a half-way house between the two. By accepting that there are a set of concepts that people are familiar with, this is a graphical representation of to what extent a film/book falls into those accepted categories.

It could then be used to find books similar to those you have liked before.

steffee,

You 'click' to adjust the values.

It's a graphical representation of the tone/mood/style of a film/book - rather than just saying it's a 'Romantic/Comedy'.

I'm a software engineer, so not that much effort.

Sorry you don't like the green. It kinda goes with my site.

Have you officially applied for a trademark or is GenrePlex™ using the ™ logo without any documentation recognising it as a legal trademark?

Thanks, I kind of worked that bit out. ;)

Oh. Thanks. So it suggests similar books? Right.

Great.

It's not that, it just makes it hard to read the instructions.

™ actually means it's not registered. If it were registered then you'd use the ® symbol. Anyone can use ™ to indicate that they wish a name/logo not to be stolen, but it's legally much weaker than ®.
