I'm familiar with the story of the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. I must admit my fascination with ROTK came from a series of games from Koei a long time ago, but I had the fortune of knowing plenty of people who are familiar with the story in its Chinese incarnation and was able to talk to me about it.
It was interesting to me that the hero of the story, Liu Bei, is not as clean or clear cut as the games initially made him out to be. Plus it's ironic that none of the major characters (with whom we spend almost the entire time during the story), or their descendents actually succeeded in unifying China - that distinction fell to a semi-major character's descendent.
There is actually someone here who *could* probably say more on the subject, but she's missing at the moment...
