Hello book people.

Since my physical-world book club fizzled out due to unresolvable conflicts (rigid classic-o-philes tearfully lauding Milton and mourning the decline of all things literary; best-new-thing-seekers flaunting downloaded reviews and condemning the luddites), I've decided to go cyber. I'll miss the wine though.

Welcome!

I think it would be OK if you drank wine while you were here. Don't know how they'd go with the Hobnobs, tho.

I think it would be ok if they had a good dipping, as long as you don't mind crumbs in your booze.

Reading with wine, now there's an idea. I often cook with wine, every now and then I put some in the food! Welcome!!

Welcome to the Boards! So, how do you feel about Milton?

Cheers

I've got nothing against Milton - he's very fire and brimstone but his tale of human weakness resonates beyond the biblical setting. I just think the "classics" aren't the only place to look for serious reflections (or any other great literary qualities). Atonement by Ian McEwan, for example, I think treats equally well of the temptations of transgression and the consequences that follow.

Well, now that we've got that out of th way - grab a chair, the coffee's free, and discuss.

Cheers

Classics = timeless

Ha! But don't worry I'm not here to lament the passing of classics, coz I suspect they're going to be around forever. And that's ok. But I think much more space and enthusiasm and encouragement should be given to writers who're alive too. Living and breathing vital stories of today. Especially writers who've been traditionally not afforded a voice.
