Hello from the Ozarks

Just saying hello. Our cold weather is starting, so I'll be doing more reading.

I like many kinds of fiction. Lately, I've been reading mostly historical fiction.

My all-time favorites: The Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. I've re-read those so many times there are few "surprises" left.

Other favorites are such books as The Source, Shogun, and Pillars of the Earth. I've enjoyed The Physician and Shaman by Noah Gordon recently, and I'm working my way through Wilbur Smith's books.

Sometimes I'll switch to good detective novels, science fiction, whatever.

Good books are hard to find, and I'm hoping the forums here will help me find some I've missed.

Best wishes from hillbilly country!

Welcome aboard!

Hillybilly country? You ain't anywhere near West Virginia son!

I love the Ozarks. I spent 8 months in central MO a few years ago. Wonderful people there.

Hi neighbor! I just love your part of the country. My dh has relatives all over down there, from Springfield to Zion, Arkansas and beyond. Sparkchaser is right, the folks are nice out that way! So, what do you like to read?

"So, what do you like to read?"

Well, I just read and enjoyed both "The Physician" and "Shaman" by Noah Gordon. I didn't read the third book in that trilogy because the reviews weren't good and the book gets into modern times and the abortion controversy, so that didn't sound good.

I'm sorry to say I avoid female authors (with Janet Evanovich being an exception). Women, bless 'em, just think different, and I can't play poker against them either.

When a book starts tending toward romance, introspection, or "feelings" - I'm gone. So, though I've tried, most female authors just don't click with me.

I like big, long, entertaining stories set in interesting times with good characters. "Shogun" is an example of the kind of book I enjoy most.

Well then, I suggest Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. If you like that then I'd also check out his The Baroque Cycle trilogy (available as either the original 3 book set or the newer 8 book release).

Cryptonomicon, eh?

I read the reviews and it sounds pretty, uh, different. I've been fascinated by codes since reading Poe's The Gold Bug as a kid. I think I'll like it.

I've got Cryptonomicon on the way from Amazon. Thanks.

I too enjoy codes and when I read the description of Cryptonomicon I was a bit apprehensive but it was good. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
