Help finding a book

Hi, there was a book that I read a few years ago at the library. I know that there was somewhat of a series (not too many though). Also one of the characters was a smart red haired girl, one was a class clown that picked on that girl, one was a girl that like the class clown, and there were two boys, one of whom, the red haired girl liked. I remember one specific book that had the picture of the class clown sitting at an outside picnic table, and there was a plot where the class went to a hiking field trip. The class clown pulled a prank on the girls using a fake rattle snake. I'm sorry if this sounds confusing and vague, but this is all i can remember. Can anyone help me find this book or author?
