I'm looking for a book I read about 10-15 years ago. I just faintly remember what it was about, beyond that, I have no idea of its title or author. I was hoping it would jog someone's memory here.

It was about a boy that went to a school for the gifted (gifted as in extremely smart). While he was there, children are going missing. Long story short, the boy discovers that one of the teachers (or maybe the director of the school, i don't remember) was killing off the kids for his own little project - using their brains for computers for Artificial Intelligence.

A mix between regular old fiction and mystery I would guess. Any ideas? Any help would be great!

Thx!

Otherland?

Could it be from Tad Williams' Otherland series? Some similarity in plot, I think. Take a look.

Novella

The Otherland series is too new I think. And more Scifi/fantasy then what I was think about. This does sound like a good read though. I might have to pick it up.

This sounds familiar. Does it have a boy taking a test, solving multiple questions at once, early on in the story? End with one child throwing his computer out of the window, and another becoming a computer program across the internet?

I know I've read that, just trying to think..... Could it be Shadows, by John Saul? Published by Bantam in 1992, which fits into your timeframe. You would probably have read it new. http://www.randomhouse.com/features/blackstone/library/bibliography.html#wind

Edited to add: I don't think the child actually threw his computer out of the window, I think he just got rid of it. My memory has been tainted by my recent computer frustrations, and my desire to carry out defenestration. :)

I think you found it! That's it! Thank you so much!

I remember as well the part where the boy is taking the test. He is solving all the easy questions first, while working on the harder questions in his mind. Then going back to answers those hard questions.

Thanks again! That's been bugging me for awhile.
