Don't remember how long ago it was, the author, or the title, but I remember reading a find-your-fate type paperback that I'd like to get ahold of again.
The premise is that you & your uncle have a strange meeting with some short 3-armed alien guys, and for some odd reason they give you the gift of being able to move in 4 dimensions.

Vague, I know but any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, along those lines. I peeked around at some other posts & found a few lists of them, but none of the book names mentioned sound familiar.
